Sheephead Consumption

Anyone ever eat sheephead? If so, any good?
We could have sunk the boat with them this past weekend, but only kept 3 or 4 of them. A guy on my jobsite today was saying how good the meat was, but all I have ever done with them is imitation crab meat for stuffing.
Matter of fact, I have a big flounder from this weekend's trip that will be stuffed with some sheephead soon.

If you learn how to clean around the ribs, you're gold.
When people catch them in my boat, I ask for them.
Closest fish to crabmeat is right. And on the halfshell on the grill,

Ya mind telling us where ya found all them sheepsteeth?
Posted on 10/17/12 at 6:49 pm to 4LSU2
If you are starving they are ok I guess.. Way to much hassle when it comes to cleaning to load the boat with sheep heads, and way to many better tasting fish out there

call me crazy but I like sheepshead better then black drum. Why? I dont know.
Nothing beats a good red or flounder though

they are a great tasting fish, restaurants serve them as "bay snapper"
They get a bad rep because they can be a bitch to clean if you dont know what your doing. There are a couple good youtube videos to help you out

South end of Lake Ponchy around old piers from camps that left with Katrina. I caught a piece of a roof shingle and the ole man hooked a window pane. Every cast was greeted with either a drum or sheephead. It was a perfect way to fish off the rest of our shrimp.

Yes, very good. Cook with a crab boil.

I'm gonna be in the Rigolets this weekend.
Did ya'll fish on the bottom with dead shrimp? Live?
My boat is over there and haven't been in a month.
What was the bait situation like?
Sheepshead, as I believe they are called, are some of the best eating fish in the water. That's not a question, that's a statement.

Live shrimp on the bottom that we picked up at Dockside. The reds are stacked up at the L&N bridge also.

Southside I would assume.
Thanks man, ya gave me something to shoot for Saturday AM. Friday i'll do the night fishing thing under our light.
That's a gimme of at least one limit of specs. The next day, before the game, is just to get out in the sun and maybe hook some of your sheepshead and a red or two before we skullfrick them Aggies.
I run out of LakeshoreEstates. Home of the rapist attack dolphin.

I clean'em the same way.
I'd invite you to fish with us, but your powerliftin' arse would probably draw water in my hull.

We visited with Pinkie for a few minutes. He rolled his cock over and laid it on the side of the boat for a few seconds, no shite.
Yeah, southside of the bridge with the current. The gnats are a mother fricker at daylight though. Dead bait was not productive this past weekend.
Good luck.

You need a fairly large one to get a nice filet like 3lbs plus.

They are great to eat. But as was stated previously, you only yield 30% or less of meat per fish and they are hell to clean.
That being said, I would not load my boat with them, but I would definitely keep an ice chest full if they are biting.
