Our oline seems to constantly regress

Just thinking back here right now. It seems like our lineman get worse as they go along here under Stud/Miles.
Black, Blackwell, T-Bob, Hurst, Josh D., etc.
I just don't get it. Seems like our guys always take a huge step back, no matter how good their previous season is...

I'm saying they hit a peak and then all of a sudden they take a massive step backwards and it doesn't make sense. Look at what happened to Black. Hurst played great last year until the NC game and he hasn't been the same since. Josh D. looked like he actually started getting better in 2010 and he hasn't looked that great since.
Williford even looked better most of last year compared to this year...
You don't think that's odd? The longer an olineman stays here, the worse they get...it really seems that way.
Why do they all of sudden take huge steps back whenever expectations get higher for them? Hell, Faulk didn't even look good in his first game this season.

Ciron Black played a year and a half with no cartilage in his knees. He gets a pass.

Blew out a knee last year.

I'd even say PJ hasn't looked the same this year...
Hell, our entire oline sucks. Who went into this season thinking this would be a glaring weakness. I know injuries haven't helped but they haven't looked good together even before the injuries...

Black - played on a bad knee his whole senior year
Josh D - sat out with a knee injury all of last year
Wiliford - has been injured much of this year
See any pattern?

If you can somehow assign responsibility to Stud and Miles for their injuries, I'll lend credence to this thought.

The difference is Ben Wilkerson . . . FACT . . .
The oline was ok at the start of Studs tenure because of the veteran olineman left over from Searles coaching. Then the oline coaching and technique went down. It did not come back up until Ben Wilkerson came aboard. He is know gone and you see the effect. wilkerson ws coaching the oline last year while Stud was playing OC.

Do you know what the common denominator is in all of your examples, sans Hurst?
Injuries.
Ciron Black - knee issues.
Josh D. - knee issues.
Blackwell - broken leg.
T-Bob Hebert - knee injury.

duece ain't no troll.
I'd say they're adjusting to something they've never had to do, pure pass blocking, without a guy that tucks it after the hot route isn't there. Not to mention they're all hurt. As for past years, your guess is as good as mine.

I was actually wondering this myself. I noticed a massive improvement in our oline last season. Since Stud has been here, I haven't been impressed with what he has done. I remember when Wilkerson left, I was wondering how our line would look.
I'm glad somebody brought that up. I really think his departure hurt more than people realize...
You can't say every olineman's regression is purely from injuries because not all of them are suffering from that problem...

Lets look at it this way. Since Stud has been here, how many of the guys that he has coached for most of the time are starting in the NFL? I bet it is only a few, if any at all.
Kind of strange considering all of the talent in general on this team.

I agree, they are not used to blocking for a non mobile qb outside of a few games that lee was starting.

Honestly some of the guys careers arent over yet. Ciron was probably over played since he played from day 1. Lonergan has had injuries through out his career. Hurst is playing out of position rt now and maybe other things are affecting his play. Williford has been fine to me and just received a concussion and continued to play.
Carnel Stewart got better every year, Herman Johnson, Barksdale, Ciron until is sr year, which he was out in tigerland every fricking night. Hebert leveled off but didnt get worse. Brett helms, ryan miller. I mean come on.
I know some guys were recruited by saban, but stewart switched to OT in 06.

To be fair, LSU looked pretty decent in pass protection last season. Granted, we didn't pass it as much but notice when Lee was in the game he didn't take as many sacks as JJ. So, they had a pocket QB to block for last year and did it fairly well.
That was mostly because JJ held the ball way too long. The sacks definitely went way up when JJ started.

Johnson and Barksdale did not get better as their careers went on. They peaked and then regressed...
Remember, Barksdale's stock actually dropped even though he got a decent draft position. Barksdale himself even said it was a mistake coming back here. Johnson looked pretty bad his final year here...

Lee learned to get rid of the ball when the protection started to break down. I'm not sure Mett is quite there yet, plus it seems like most of Mett's sacks are coming at the hands of blitzing DBs ... he doesn't seem to be able to read these very well.

I'd say that PA helped with Lee's protection a lot. JJ wasn't quite as much of a threat to throw. With Mett and average receivers it's a different animal. Most D coordinators have noted, and some players have said publicly, that a good game plan is to force LSU to throw for yardage. Couple that with the fact that a power run game like last year's eats up linemen. Even if they're not publicly injured, they can still be eroding from the constant pounding. If I had to put money on it I'd say it's the slow wear and tear from an SEC ground and pound offense, not the big pronounced injuries, that answers the question of your thread.

It is easy to regress with you are out your LT, and your RG, and possible your new LT who was your RT.
