Shoot to kill.
It's deer hunting not deer farming

He will be shot this year for sure. I thought it was cool to see what three years did for him.

I was speaking about this subject today. My grandfather has 100 acres and we got some deer pics. One was a young 8 pt. my grandfather's friend was saying leave him alone, but it's only 100 acres and there's a slim chance he makes it until next year. I would hate for someone else to kill it.

I always find this excuse interesting. Both small and large properties can be managed with success. I only hunt on 160 acres, its all a mindset.

Very cool that you've got the same good looking deer on your property for 3 consecutive years.
Your patience will hopefully pay off this year. Beautiful deer.

We also found both sides of his sheds this summer.

You cant miss him with the split ear.
Good for you, I always laugh when I see deer hunters taking out "inferior bucks" that are only yearlings. Of the factors contributing to antler size under normal circumstances there is nothing more important than allowing them to age. There are countless pics from Kroll and others showing miserable looking spikes and 4 pointers that grow into Booners if allowed to reach 4 years.
If you want to see big ones, you have to let them walk its just that simple.

I've got a lot of cool pictures of last year/this year deer that show what just a year will do...but we are high fenced so its not as cool. If more people understood deer management everyone would benefit.

They can be junk their first 3 years and in year 4 and 5 just explode into beautiful racks. What a lot of people don't understand is year 5 is the year they are putting the least amount of protein into building their body and the most into their horns. letting deer reach that 5 year mark is prime whenever taking a trophy.
We've been managing our place the last 7 years and each year we get better and better deer along with more and more bucks by just letting them walk and culling out the truly inferior deer.

I agree. Age is a huge factor and one of the few you have some control over. I can't change genetics. I do plant spring plots and put out minerals but that doesn't do as much as just giving a deer some time.

No but what is does is keep bucks in your area and they feel less pressured. So they get comfortable in your area and they will hang around and grow old.

Yep. We plant year round and have and have planted a lot of sawtooths and fruit trees. My goal is to have a year round haven with a smorgasbord of food.
