you are already ahead of Notre Dame. It would be unprecedented for an undefeated #2 team to fall like that in the human polls.

At the very end of the season it would be weird but before...it's not unheard of.

Penn State was jumped in week 9 as #1 w/o losing in 1994.

But I just don't see ND beating USC by a wider margin than Oregon...it doesn't seem that is how ND is built compared to Oregon.

Since they have common opponents...it would be really hard for ND to jump Oregon if they're both undefeated despite ND's name brand.

Oregon would have to win in a beauty contest but ND's schedule is tougher because of OU - and even a championship game would not help that much because the USC would have 3 losses at that point.

It's probably all moot because I really doubt ND beats USC unless USC has some injury issues before then.

However, I agree that a ND win would have to be extremely impressive and coupled with an impressive win at Oklahoma (since Kansas St has already beaten them at home too) to sway voters enough when Oregon would, in this scenario, would beat USC for the second time right after ND.

Agree with H-Town Tiger that Oregon would have to really have some narrow escapes against a couple of mediocre teams for ND to jump them on a significant amount of ballots.

Michigan winning out would help ND a bit and Oklahoma not dropping more games would be crucial.

That's true, but, they were only getting a plurality of #1 votes. Colorado and Nebraska were also getting #1 votes.
PSU also moved from 3 to 1 after #1 Florida lost, jumping both CU and NU. Nebraska passed Penn State after beating #2 Colorado. All 3 had been getting #1 votes and Nebraska got the majority of CU votes iirc. Weird circumstance there that will not be the case this year.
