Time of Possession: LSU offensive strategy

I do believe the key offensive stat for Les has been TOP. This equates to his successes on defense as well.......last weekend that stat line suffered and so went the Tigers.
Many get caught up in the measuring stick but miss the forest for the trees where Les' philosophy is concerned.
Flame away monkeys.

I say lets run the old Texas Tech or new WVU offense if we are going to go 3 and out every possession. How is the D going to be on the field more then it already is?

Yea Les has been the master and savior of our defense.
You're a tool.

Hey Charles.
I do agree that when we win the TOP we are successful. Teams that control the TOP have 2 things in common. They can run the ball all day and convert 3rd downs. But why didnt we win the TOP vs UF? We were running against 9 men in the box so they stuffed it all day long. And we were what 1 of 13 on 3rd downs?

Note that I cited last week as where that approach crumbles.
Look, we won the TOP against most teams last year and as all have stated each team knew the plan and stacked the box. This team is beat up on the oline and that is the key component.
Also, give credit where credit is due. UF is much improved and we faced a good QB this year rather than their scared backup....in The Swamp.

Every team we face is going to do that to us now. (9 man fronts) We refuse to adjust, so why wouldn't they? Les has won a lot of football for us, and getting rid of him would be ridiculous IMO. I'm just saying some changes do need to be made. Miles in the past has stepped up when this needed to be addressed. Chavis is on Nick Saban's level when it comes do defense and college football. He is such a better Hire then I thought he was when we got him. We need to do the same on O. Problem is that Les has a lot of input on the O. He will need to change himself for this to happen.

A good defense helps just a tad in keeping the opponents O on the sidelines. That is the total package, otherwise a shitty D gives up points at will and TOP is rendered moot.

Obviously. I was talking about the offensive side when we have possession.

Didn't you state a few weeks ago that JD had played well in past seasons and you thought he would do a good job filling in at LT vs AU?? It was like you had never watched him play pre-injury @ LG for multiple seasons getting worn out by interior DL. That was the point most understood that the depth of the OL had been hugely oversold to the public.

nooooooo..... I said he would be improved from past seasons due to bulking up and increased strength, then said he would be the best choice due to his knowledge of the assignments versus putting an inexperienced kid in.

And was he the best choice?

Could be, which doesn't bode well.
TOP is everything for a team with an offense and defense like LSU.
Hell, look at Fla. Muschamp simply beat LSU at LSU's own game.
Bama plays the same type of offense.
The key is to control TOP by running the ball and passing effectively. Granted we couldn't run against Fla, but had we simply caught the passes that should have been caught I still think LSU wins that game Sat.

bingo. Boone's missed 1st down and ODB fumble were 2 critical points in that game.

He added weight, but has always had limited explosive power and strength for OL. Is he stronger than when a freshman? Yes. Is he capable of handling average and better DL? Not that most of us reality fans can determine.
LSU's offensive strategy leaves little margin of error against quality teams. D or special teams gives up a few quick scores and that's it, especially when the O can't seem to do the little things right more often than not. Has continuity been good due to injuries and suspensions? No. Do LSU fans need to keep their panties in a wad all season over things that can't be changed at this point? Not from my perspective. Sometimes seasons just don't go the way people expect for numerous reasons.
If Spurrier liked to gig Miles like he does Saban he would be having a field day this week regarding the offensive challenges.

Rewatching the game...
Holy shite, the receivers are BAD
Counted at LEAST 7 legitimate dropped passes. I think it's a different ball game without all the drops.
That is the #1 thing killing the offense.
The play calling is bland but they are throwing in some wrinkles.
My issue with play calling is they get too cute sometimes and go away from things that actually do work ala HB passes, TE passes etc
