October 5, 1951: In Game 2 of the World Series, right fielder Mickey Mantle's season comes to an immediate end when he severely injures his right knee when his cleats get caught on a drainage cap at Yankee Stadium. Joe DiMaggio's abrupt call for Willie Mays' fly ball in center field leads many to believe the last minute call was a contributing factor to the torn cartilage suffered by the 19 year-old rookie.

I ran into Joe DiMaggio at a donut place in new york one time. That guy is a self centered douche.

I would be too, if I was regarded as the grestest right handed hitter & got to bang Marilyn Monroe.

Seriously though, what could've been? Mantle could have played 3-4 more years. He would've pushed Maris to the end in '61 (although Maris is a personal hero) and probably could have gotten to 650+ HRs

He's the Griffey jr. of the 50's

Not worried, I wouldn't mind seeing Nats win whole thing

If not for that and Mantle's heavy drinking, he would've been the best ever. He literally had everything, speed, power, could hit the ball all over the field, a cannon for an arm, and a switch hitter.
There's only one player I can think of right now that has it all like Mantle, and that's Mike Trout. Even his career has barely gotten off the ground.
