I think most of the shut off valves are square about 12 inches by 12 inches and say shut off in case of emergency or something like that and have a plunger like button to press. Just metal plunger button although maybe some are possible coated with red plastic.

All offshore GOM platforms should have ESD (emergency shut down) devices located at various locations about the platform including the boat landing level and helipad so ESD can be activated just prior to emergency egress.
At the boat landing there should also be a "Loop" ESD which can pulled from the bow of a boat using a boat hook to shut in platform without boarding.
None of this seems to have helped this guy. Sucks for him and his family.
