This is an animation that details what happened that day. I know most know what happened but it helps to visualize it as well

While the police clearly did a terrible job of handling the situation and deserve a share of the blame how this report can try and say that the fans sobriety levels and aggression was no factor is pretty ridiculous. It pretty much negates the credibility of the report.

Also, 450,000 pages of documents? Wow.

Fans are drunk at every game, be it football, throwball, baseball, etc.

This has never happened at any of those. To me that makes it pretty clear that drunkenness had almost nothing to do with this. They seem to have managed just fine at Tiger Stadium, The Box, MLB parks, MLS, NFL, and EPL parks before and since even though there were numerous drunkards at all of those games.

Let me know when The Sun releases the main headline "WE LIED" with the font size just as big as they did back in 89.

Well they tried before so the victims families probably wont be able in a tort suit due to Res Judicata (double jeopardy).

Although the government would still be able to bring them to trial themselves if they violated some type of federal law.

I say that based on my knowledge of US common law, assuming its that similar to the British common law. I'm not sure how close the two really are though.

Thanks... Bleed

I was just reading Marcotti's article

quote:

In this case, not only were the authorities not fully investigated, it has since emerged that, on 164 occasions, witness statements by police officers and emergency services, as well as other documents, were redacted, selectively edited or otherwise doctored to shift blame on the supporters. This, folks, is what you call a cover up, of the kind that weakens the trust in all authorities and makes their job more difficult. It's one of the worst possible crimes law enforcement can commit, because it doesn't just affect the direct victims, it also affects their very own colleagues.

A lot of nice statements of support from the footballing world today Celtic, Rangers, Wayne Rooney, Simon Kjaer, Rio Ferdinand just to name a few.

It's amazing to think back 23 years ago, Kenny Dalglish went to all 96 funerals(four in one day). :legend:

Seriously? There have been several incidents such as this, though not quite to that extent, in soccer across the world. Including one involving the same group of supporters like 4 years earlier. You think it's just a total coincidence Liverpool fans were involved in two of the worst European sport tragedies in history just a few years apart?

Again it's pretty well known the police really screwed up and also their actions afterwards only made things look even worse but ultimately the blame is on the people who actually caused the crush. Still no less tragic for the victims though.

How can you possibly justify this?

Twice as many fans were given entrance into pens than should have been. Police should have controlled and restricted entrance to the pens until safety capacity was reached. It's as simple as that.

ETA Especially after an official report has finally been released where the police accept responsibility for the tragedy and are being held accountable.

Not to mention the lethargic reaction from the police after the incident began to occur resulted in more deaths than there should have been.

Dude, talk that shite in another thread... The report clearly states the people were funneled into pens that were well over capacity, causing them to be crushed... 41 of them could have lived if emergency services responded quicker...

This sums it up pretty well:

quote:

The Prime Minister said that 164 police statements had been amended and 116 negative comments removed and that South Yorkshire Police had been part of a deliberate attempt to smear the dead fans with false claims they were drunk and ticketless on the day of the match.
