Anyone bought furniture from Ashley Furniture a couple of weekends ago?

This is really random but I remember seeing this commercial in late August advertising that if the Saints returned the first punt in their regular season Washington game for a TD, all furniture bought the August weekend was free. LINK
So at the dome Sunday, I was waiting for a punt to see if Sproles would cost the furniture store $1,000's, and then Washington finally punted. However, it was blocked for a TD. I'm wondering what happen with the whole furniture special. Does the block return for a TD count, or did they crawfish their way out of an enormous financial debacle?

It probably will not count becasue it says the Saints "First official punt return." That was not a punt return but a block / return. However, I am sure Ashley Furniture is getting its attorneys ready because people will want to claim it as a punt return.

Their rules say, "If an eligible player on the Saints receives and returns the punt for a TD" I don't know if that really counts as received, but you better believe I'd be in there trying at least.

now that is an excellent question!! i don't believe it specified a non-blocked punt.. and it was returned for a TD.. i believe that Olinde's here in BR had the same deal..
i'd like to know what the outcome is on this...

This is an interesting thread, Nip.

I'm sure it was an insured risk they were taking on. Similar to the win a car type thing at golf tournaments.

You waited until now to tell us about this?

Me too. I'm tempted to call and ask.
(I didn't buy anything, but I'd love to know)
Give em the old "a friend of mines bought something, and wants to know" routine...

yea it won't actually cost Ashley anything, but whatever bank or insurance agency insured the this "competition"
but I guarantee you they have their lawyers on it going through the fine print

"receives and returns"
In general football terms "receive and return" a punt implies that the punt returner receives the ball and returns it. It would not include "blocking the punt and advancing" the ball into the endzone.
Surely it will be litigated, but its likely "Receive and return" is not "block and advanced into the endzone".

Roby still "recieved the ball" after it was "punted". Then proceeded to "return" it.

That would be my argument...

I polled some of the attorneys here and we think it counts. However, I don't know much about LA law. There may be an issue regarding consideration as well. Either way, the company probably has insurance for this contest so you have a good shot of winning your argument.

"consideration"
In Louisiana (a civil law state) we have "cause" and not really not consideration.
It would be easy for someone to say that the cause for their decision to purchase the furniture was this contest offered by the retailer. That would be enough.
It really comes down to how a court defines "receive and return". Your guess is as good as mine. Would make an interesting case. The court may find it ambiguous and find that receive and retun would include a block and return and Ashley should have worded it differently if they did not intend it to cover a block.

With them using the words, official punt return, they wont have to pay anything. It was not an official return for a TD.

I agree, but my argument would be that the intended punt returner was actually the one who scooped up the block punt. He was the "Intended receiver of the punt" and he was the one who "received" it. I really hope someone calls them because I'm really curious.

It won't go down in the stats as a punt or a punt return.
