I am in the same boat as you.My son is 8 this year and wants to hunt bad with me.My dad left me his Model 700 .270.It had the wood stock and has a scope already on it.I bought a Model 700 youth synthetic stock on Ebay for $35 and some Hornady Custom Lite ammo.I would like to put a Limsaver pad on it as well.take a look on Ebay for a youth stock if you go the 700 route.

Cannot say enough good about these things.
I highly suggest putting them on everything everybody owns that has any amount of recoil at all. They do wonders.
