If I ever asked him why, I don't remember. We hunted mostly oaks, so I think it had something to do with the leaves getting in the way in the fall or something. He only used the .22 on the crows in his yard, and the occasional wood pecker.

Shotgun early for shooting through leaves and 22 later because woods are more open and harder to get in shotgun range.
to the OP: I like 17hmr using CCI Full metal Jackets. It's deadly out to 100yds under the perfect circumstances.
