Without saying "it's just a feeling," rockabilly is a hard term to pin down. The simplest way may be to describe it as picturing an exciting blend of the blues, country and gospel sounds of American music that were prevalent, up to the mid 1950's. Mix that in with the heavier beat that was becoming more and more a part of pop music of the day and the result was "rock 'n' roll."
So what then is rockabilly?
Let's call it a window. Many young musicians found a sound that appealed to the ears and dancing feet of their generation. The older generation stepped back in amazement. During the time frame of 1955 thru 1960 a unique musical historical window was created. All the musical ingredients that came through that window shined into the souls of American teenagers. "Rockabilly music" WAS THE WINDOW.
Rockabilly is one of the purist forms of American roots music. It was never a watered-down, homogenized sound designed by corporate record companies to build profits. You can't change something musical that is pure and simple without ruining the result.
This unique music is far from a "thing from the past." It is alive today more than ever. In the small venues throughout the world you will find legendary performers and younger musicians in their 20's and 30's playing strictly rockabilly. The same driving guitar licks, frantic vocals, standup bass slap and heavy snare drum backbeat still sound great!

Warren Smith -- "Red Cadillac & A Black Mustache"
Buddy Covelle - "Lorraine"
Jerry Arnold - "Slewfoot Sue"
Buddy Knox - "Devil Woman"

Town Hall Party -- coolest TV show EVER
The Collins Kids also appeared on the Steve Allen Show, but I don't believe they ever had a national hit.

Lorrie is so freakin hot in these videos. I have to keep reminding myself she's about 15 years old. She eloped with Johnny Cash's manager not long after that. Larry has written a bunch of country hits, including Delta Dawn for Tanya Tucker. They got back together a few years ago and tour sporadically, especially in Europe where Rockabilly is still popular.

Johnny Carroll & the Hot Rocks - "Wild Wild Women"
A jawdropping clip was the movie Rock Baby Rock It (1957), filmed in Dallas on a budget of about $12.98, using local acts -- today it is a priceless historical document.
Trivia tidbit: Johnny Carroll was owner of The Cellar, a beatnik coffeehouse-hangout in Fort Worth, where several Secret Service agents infamously got drunk on the night of November 21, 1963.
RIP

Rose Maddox auditioned for Bob Wills and didn't get hired. She told him, "Wait til my brothers get back from the war, I'll show you!" And she did.

I think I started a thread on the pre-debut MB but IIRC 1) it was anchored b/c I named it "Rockabilly!", and 2) yt seems to have disappeared
So get with it, tear it up, and rave on!

This Missouri teenager cut a couple of singles for Decca in 1956. They didn't sell, he left the biz to join Sears (eventually becoming a regional VP in Dallas), and his records were forgotten -- except by rockabilly fanatics, who kept interest in his small recorded output alive. So much so that in the 90s he retired from Sears and started a second carer playing nostalgia shows in Europe, much more popular now than in his glory days.
"Barking Up The Wrong Tree"
Apparently this song made the UK top 50 in 1976 -- 20 years after it was first released
"Bird Dog"
Lead guitar on these is the immortal Grady Martin, who played the epochal feedback on Johnny Burnette's "Train Kept A Rollin'" (see above)
