Anybody ever used a Jockey Box at their tailgate?

I've been looking at jockey boxes online and considering one for our tailgate. Anybody have any experience with these? I would think it would be alot easier than trying to keep an entire keg cold all day...

We made our own. Something similar. It's great.

How many feet of tubing did ya'll use? Looks like you can go anywhere from 50ft up to 120ft...obviously the longer, the colder your beer will be from the tap. I'm looking at one with 70ft of tubing...I think that will be plenty, especially as we get later into the season.

Interesting. Please explain the concept.

Basically, you cut 2 holes in a cooler and put coiled stainless steel line inside, which can be varying lengths. At one hole (on the front of the cooler) you put a beer tap/pour spout, on the back you have a connection that goes to the keg tap and CO2 tank. Fill the cooler with ice so that it cools the stainless coils. Beer goes from the room temp keg through the length of coil, cooling as it passes through, until it reaches the tap ice-cold. That's the gist of it...pretty ingenious, and alot easier than icing down a keg in a trash can and having to pump the thing every time you want a beer.

I don't have one, but several people in my brew club do. Very handy. Get a co2 tank, regulator, and sanke hookup and you're good to go.

Yeah everybody at our tailgate is 30ish and has small kids, but I was just thinking a small keg of Abita or something at a tailgate would be easier than all the glass bottles and stuff that we normally go through, and having it on tap would just be a nice touch. Still debating whether to buy one already built or make my own. I don't know alot about draft beer equipment, and I can get one already assembled for not much more than it would cost to build it myself...

You just answered your question.

Yeah I think I'm pretty much set on it, just wanted to know if anybody had experience with them and how well they work...seems like folks have had good luck with them, so I'm prolly gonna pull the trigger on it and hope to have it in time for the first game in 2 weeks!

We used to use these when I was in college during Mardi Gras to avoid having to ice down keg after keg after keg. They work. Ice water works better than ice.

With or without a jockey box you still have to push the beer. You would need a CO2 tank

Also I don't know the price of copper vs steel pipe but it might work if you are making it. Steel is the best though

Yeah the one I'm looking at has steel tubing and has the hookup for the CO2 tank already, just have to get a tank and get it filled and I'll be good to go.

I got a tank for a pretty good price years ago at LA fire extinguisher. I usually get them filled at Capitol Welding cause it's closer to my house

alot easier than icing down a keg in a trash can

Kegs must be cold to dispense beer correctly; Warm kegs serve foamy beer.

Everything I've read says use a room temp keg and the beer is cooled in the jockey box. Otherwise, you'd just use a hand pump and a trash can. The temp of the keg should only matter in how much CO2 pressure is needed to dispense the beer, at least that's my understanding.

That and temperature affects the amount of dissolved co2 in the beer. Not a problem if you're drinking it in one day.

i have one that i built a couple years back. It has always worked well and is simple to make.

I know the parts required to make this are all over ebay, but does anyone know of a local place (BR,nola, north shore) that would be a one stop shop for something like this?
We're about to purchase the setup for our tailgate, but give that we're days away from game one, will probably be going old school the first week..... unless there is some place to get these supplies locally. Anyone know of a place?
