Yeah... You don't Tolkien much do you?
He wanted the Silmarillion, The Hobbit and LOTR to be a series about gems and jewels. Also the demand for more books was there, the same way fans of ASoIaF demand books.

Are you sure you Tolkien much?
Because the hobbit was so successful the publisher asked for a sequel, and as Tolkien progressed with Rhe Lord of the Rings he made revisions in The Hobbit to accommodate it. The entire Riddles In the Dark chapter, iirc was retroactively added to The Hobbit
