Was watching a rerun of last week's show last night...really wondering if Martin (and Weiss et al) use the show as a way to emphasize things from the books/ add stuff Martin didn't include but wishes he had...

Speaking of The Others, WTF is the deal with these:

(S1)

(S3) - "Always the artists" - Mance

The first design (bad angle - wish I could find a better one) almost looked to be a rune or hieroglyph of some sort.
The second one could be as well...but it looks more or like a "crop circle"

Is this a hint at something about the Others?
If so, why not mentioned in the books?

If they are aliens...

I will set something of importance on fire. I am super cereal

As far as the patterns, I am sure they are a message from the Others. A way of saying your days are numbered/we are coming.

The spirals have been driving me crazy. Even the first pic with the inverted triangle seems to be a spiral of sorts like some pics I found while looking up symbolism of spirals. They are old symbols of shite from rebirth to death. Very religious in nature, but I found this quote:
quote:

‘The spiral can be symbol of creation, however it is also a potent symbol of dissolution into chaos. The spiral spins both ways. Downward spirals represent the forces of entropy that are constantly working to instigate chaotic collapse.

Inevitably, these two spirals—the generative and the destructive—turn out to be one continuous cycle. Fiddlehead ferns dry up, fold in on themselves, and collapse back into the earth.”

Where I found the quote

I love Jugian symbolism...
