I guess the word could be fealty. He has a devotion to his beliefs. He believes in the integrity of the Kingsguard. When Aerys questioned the purity of the Kingsguard, Jaime acted based on his beliefs without the knowledge of the incoming degradation of his namesake.
Afterwards, the people started calling him Kingslayer and kept reminding him of his betrayal to the Kingsguard duties to protect the king. This changed him into believing he is alone and his sister is the only one he can trust. Bran would have destroyed the only thing keeping him from going insane.
When Jaime was taken from Cersei, he became lost and humbled when imprisoned and his hand cut off. After meeting Brienne, he started to trust people more and learned more about himself.

I've done all 5 books. It's sometimes difficult to keep the books and show separated. If I've broken a rule, I apologize. It was unintentional. For those of you so in love with Jamie, tsk tsk.
