I was thinking that they'd use Bran's story next season to do some of the backstory that was missing, and had no idea how else they'd progress it.
That was my theory. Not the first one that was wrong, probably won't be the last.

Saw this meme on my newsfeed:

Yeah, they have to elaborate in the next season at least somewhat about Lyanna and Rhaegar, or else the Hodors will be pissed. It's almost certain that the next novel Jon will find out about his ancestry, as well as being named Robb's heir, so this is the season where they at least have to foreshadow it.

I think Oberyn hinted at it in S4E1 with his conversation with Tyrion. He said something along the lines of "Rhaegar Targaryen ran off with another woman..."

If the Hodors had been paying attention (which they haven't) they'd already know that. I'm thinking a more "promise me Ned", or flashback to the Tower of Joy.

Not sure if we'll have that this season since Bran won't be back until Season 6. I'm thinking we won't get the R+L=J reveal until Season 6 and will be revealed around halfway through TWoW.

D&D has been pretty adamant about not using flashbacks (they mentioned it again this last ComicCon that they don't like doing them), so they'll probably incorporate it by some other means. I don't know that we'll ever see a full on flashback on the show.

I'd love to see that Ned flashback when he's praying at the Weirwood that Jon and Robb grow close like brothers.

Completely agree, I'm just saying they need to start foreshadowing it this season, and aside from Bran, I'm not sure how they can do it.

We're getting one this season, in the form of Maggy the Frog. I really don't know why they don't like doing flashbacks.

Same here; kind of makes me think they're lazy.
The Maggy the Frog scene should be great. Hodors' minds will be blown.

Honestly, I think we should have seen the following flashbacks/visions:
1) Tower of Joy (obviously)
2) The Knight of the Laughing Tree (would be great if they did it in the manner of the Tale of Three Brothers from the Deathly Hallows: LINK)
3) Jaime killing Aerys and Ned walking in on him.
4) Jaime's vision of being dragged to the cellars of Casterly Rock, with his family abandoning him and then meeting Rhaegar and the former Kingsguard.

#4 would be the most relevant to the current happenings in the books/show.

Did I completely miss this in the books?

It was a dream he had. Storm of Swords I believe.

It's in the chapter where Jaime saves Brienne from the bear.

Have they ever mentioned maggy in the show? At all?
If david and Dan have said they won't use flashbacks, then it's possible they could just bring maggy into the current timeline. There's a lot of jumping to conclusions that since maggy is being introduced that there will automatically be flashbacks now.
