Heard the NBC announcer say that the mom (Maree Bennie) of Lauren Jackson, the Australian center, scored over 1,000 points at LSU.
I had never heard that before. I'm not a big women's basketball fan, but I am fairly familiar with who Lauren Jackson is.
I was looking up Maree Bennie and read this:
"Twenty six years ago, when the Tennessee Lady Vols traveled to Baton Rouge to take on the LSU Lady Tigers (then known as the BenGals, believe it or not), both teams were ranked in the top 5. LSU had the Aussie twin towers, Julie Gross and Maree Bennie, who is now better known as the mother of Seattle Storm star Lauren Jackson."

I'm a Louisiana native and have two degrees from LSU. I have never heard that the women's team used to be nicknamed the BenGals.
When did the BenGals become the Lady Tigers?

If someone was from out of state and/or spent one year at LSU and had never heard of the BenGals, it probably wouldn't be a surprise.
It was just one way of pointing out that I've been around LSU a long time and am very familiar with its history.

I say it all the time and I'm not pretentious at all. If the truth hurts, don't reflect on your non-2-degree-holding self.

I don't think they were ever officially the BenGals. It was just what people called them as a nickname, kind of like Bayou Bengals.
