It's probably hard to be a good father when you are working like 18 hour days. I think a few coaches have this problem.

That's just stupid

I feel for the parents, saw what I put mine through with my drinking over the years. The son knew what his fate would most likely be as did his parents, and I imagine they did all they could to stop it. You can't stop an addict.
