the studio should decide within two weeks whether to move forward. Potentially decisive: the recruiting of Russell Crowe, who worked with Goldsman and Howard on A Beautiful Mind and would replace newly departed Javier Bardem as gunslinger Roland Deschain.

And here is a new wrinkle to add to the mix. Javier Bardem is no longer in the mix as gunslinger Roland Deschain. I’m told that director Ron Howard and producers Brian Grazer and Goldsman have been talking with their A Beautiful Mind star Russell Crowe about playing Deschain. While there is no deal with Crowe, that is the star that Warner Bros will be evaluating as the studio decides on whether to take a leap on a nine-volume book that has a huge following, with Howard, King and their partners planning a multi-platform presentation that could be unforgettable. The story will be told through three films and two limited run TV series.

I really wish Eastwood was 30 years younger.

Completely agree about Eastwood. I like Javier Bardem, but he was totally wrong for the role.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt would make a great Eddie.

How many of you have read the series?

I recently finished it, and I must say, it's not nearly as epic as I expected, and not nearly as good. Sure, some of the books are pretty good, and some of the things that happen in them are DAMN good. but taken as a whole, the series is no better than a 7 out of 10. King sets up this epic ending, and then fumbles the ball on the 1 yard line. And I'm not even talking about the "Ending Ending". Even if you stop when he starts warning you to read no further, the ending is lackluster.

The sad part is, some of the story is SO good that you can sense there's an incredible story waiting there, right around the corner. King just never quite gets there.

3:10 to Yuma makes me thing Crowe as Roland, although not ideal, will work. And JGL as Eddie is good too. How about Zoe Saldana for Susannah?

I'm about halfway through The Drawing of the Three and I'm really enjoying it. It's good stuff.

Yes please.

James Franco would be good for Eddie, too. I assume they'll cast some lesser known kid actor for Jake.

fricking this.

But Crowe is a good choice.

Another good choice is Ben Foster.

An older choice? Dennis Quaid or go black with Chiwetel Ejiofor or Idris Elba

I think Elba would be amazing.

Full disclosure, though:

I think Chiwetel and Idris should be in every movie. . .ever.

if you want to go young, that's a good choice.

You could go more mature with an Angela Bassett, or Vanessa Williams. I love Latifah in pretty much every role she is in. . .underrated chick.

Perfect choice for Eddie Dean is Jay Baruchel. Eddie is your comic relief character. Jesse Eisinberg/Michael Cera (let's face it, they are the same guy) could fit this role, too.
