A good adaptation does not necessarily have to be 100% faithful to the source material. Book to film adaptations require at least a minimal amount of digression, otherwise it would never translate well.

If you want a faithful book to movie adaptation watch anything put out by PBS/BBC. While excellent, they are also drawn out and lackluster.
