He will be 12wks at that time. He has been hanging out at my parents house for the last couple weeks due to my crazy schedule at the moment. I've been around dogs all of my life, but this will be my first hunting dog. Anything I should start doing in particular at this early of an age. He already walks on a lead pretty well and is damn near crate trained already.

Keep him with you as much as possible, teach him the basics, come, sit, whoa and don't let him cheat, but let him be a puppy. Bring him outside and for walks. Let him roam and explore. When he gets older and knows come and gives you the finger (and it is coming) go inside and order a Dogtra shock/beeper combo collar and teach him he will not disobey. It won't take much...

My buddy with a GSP had to beat the hell of of him for three years before he hunted. This was AFTER dog college.

What type of hunting are you going to train him for?

I would agree after having long talks with the breeder I got him from. As a matter of fact, she told me that he should respond well to training and uses the prior breeding with the two parents. Also referencing the parents as well. Almost all of the previous litter hunts and has done well in trials. She also informed me the other day that my pups grandpa is one of the top hunting dogs in California. So, its definitely in his blood so to speak. She referenced some hunting club/trial thing of some sort, forgot what she told me.....

Cute pup.
I'm training my first hunting dog. My Boykin pup is now just over 6 months. My single biggest tip would be to always make the puppy earn something before getting it. For example, I made Willis sit and stay every time we went outside/inside. I make him sit a little ways away while I prepare his food and stay until I release him. Make him learn that nothing comes free for him. It will also instill a sense of learning in him if he knows that doing what you say ='s good.
Have fun. I'm having a blast with mine. 2 months until dove season

I assume that is yours in your sig?
Didn't know much about the boykin, but they seem to pretty intelligent little guys and good hunters.

If you want to duck hunt with him, you will need to start him retrieving as soon as you can. Retrieving is not the primary insticnt of the breed. Don't be afraid to force fetch your dog, if he doesn't learn it early, it will be difficult later. Trust me, I have two GSP's and neither one fetches as I would like.

im not terribly worried about him not wanting to retrieve... the mom and dad both duck hunt and most of the pups from the previous litter duck hunt, i think they are almost 1.5-2yrs old. But, as soon as i get him we will definitely doing some retrieving work. The lady's parents have a big empty lot across the street from their house... gonna be where he cuts his teeth

If you have been around retrievers, don't expect the same desire from a shorthair to retrieve. Mine will retrieve, but to him that isn't hunting and mine want to hunt...

yeh, i've hunted with a golden for the last 5yrs or so. Honestly, it took him probably till he was 3-4 before he was worth a shite in the blind and actually did well retrieving. He was 7 this past season and is still an a-hole in the boat!
but when the boat stops and the blind comes up, he chills and does he thing.

Get a feather on a string connected to a stick. it'll be hours of entertainment for you both. I wish i would have done this with my gsp.

soooo.... find a duck feather or just any feather? guess i could always get some duck scent and put on there... is this just supposed to try and get him in that mind set?
