Vienna Acoustics Waltz Speakers

I'm thinking about buying these on Craigslist. Owner has receipt that proves they bought them for $2,200. Asking $450. I don't know much about speakers. I recently got a turntable and want some speakers that crank. Anybody know much about these? TIA

Why would somebody sell them at that much of a loss? Doesn't make much sense to me.

Supposedly they were in a 2nd home which they sold.

Solid set of speakers... You will have a better pair of stereo speakers than 75% of people out there.
Id put them slightly above definitive technology or reference series Klipsch.

That's good news. I'd only be using them for music, not theater stuff. You think those two speakers alone will do the job? I've been reading that a 2 way system is preferred by many for music, that the multi is for theater mostly. Thoughts? Thanks.

A nice 2 channel setup will blow an average 5.1 out of the water any day of the week.
All of my money is in 2 channel audio and will prob never do 5.1 again.
What will you be using to push them?

A sony STR-DE975. I posted this same thread on a different site and a guy is telling me "they only go down to 70 Hz; that is NOT a full-range speaker, and they are clearly intended to be used with a subwoofer"
Posted on 7/11/12 at 8:06 pm to Toreaux
Really, they don't go down to 20?
I thought they would go 20-20k
Pick up a small sub, maybe a REL if u can find one... I'd def look at diff amplification though, just sayin.

So you think I need a new receiver? That Sony is 15 years old, but I didn't think anything was wrong with it. What do you recommend- not too expensive? You guys think the Viennas are worth it if I get a sub? Or should I just keep looking? I also came across a pair of Klipsch rb61 speakers for $300. Would I need a sub with those? What would you do?

Dude, even time and phase coherent speakers don't go that low unless they already have a built-in sub - and you're talking quite a lot of expense.
The ones I have go down to 30Hz, and that itself is pretty rare in a full-range speaker:

Im sorry, I mistyped... Don't know why I put the entire frequency range...
Should be 30-20k

You don't want to get me started, Over the past few years, I have become audio snob... I won't even tell you how much I have invested in audio, it will make you sick.
I always had the mindset "You'll never hear the difference, its all a waste of money" But once you get the chance to play with it and experience what good audio is, its addictive.
Now that didn't really answer your question... But yes, you need a new receiver. I'd bet the THD on that thing is close to 1% and I'd imagine its not even high current. Look into Marantz, for an entry level person, Marantz is prob the most cost effective. Some people will suggest Onkyo, although I'm not a huge fan.

As a starter set and for 500 bucks, the Viennas are totally worth it. LIke I said, you are going from entry level bought at any national retailer, to a semi-premium set of speakers. Like I said in my first post, your stereo speakers will be better than 75% of other peoples.

That's exactly what I need- a sound snob to help me get started. Thanks for the tips. Here's what someone from the other site says: A speaker with that weight and height and only 3 inches deep clearly will be very unstable unless they are anchored to a wall or attached securely to a large baseplate (like an HDTV monitor has).
You should really either look for speakers that go down below 50 Hz or plan on spending $400-500 on a decent subwoofer to go with those."
SO, those Viennas look pretty sweet, but now I'm second guessing, especially if I have to get a sub. I also came across a pair of Klipsch rb61 for $300. From what I've read, some sat those are geared more towards theater setups? I'm definitely more into the music aspect, but am also on a budget. Thanks again!

Oh shite, to be honest, I was thinking of a completely different speaker with Vienna... I was thinking of the Mozarts or Bachs.
My bad. Still, the Viennas are great speakers, but I can almost guarantee the low end is going to be minimal with such a small cabinet. They are prob going to sound something like the Def Tech XTRs.
shite, now you're in a tough spot. The Vienna as a speaker manufacturer is better than Klipsch, but yeah, you will def need a sub. But I think you would want a sub with the Klipsch too.
How much are you looking to spend total?
or how much are you willing to part with? Remember, this is an investment. A good audio setup will last you 20+ yrs.

I don't know- $1,500? That's why I'm on Craigslist. Those Klipsch rb61 look pretty decent for $300. At least a starting point, right? Someone mention Marantz as a good entry level receiver. Do I have to have a sub? We don't really have space for it and my wife isn't a fan of having it in the corner of the room exposed.

Energy RC-10, $220 for the pair, new
regarding the Viennas, not sure how that Sony receiver will like the 4 ohm load. It has an impedance switch but that will just kill your power

If u wanna spend around 1500 and you're just looking for stereo... Take a look at B&W 683s or if you wanna push it a little B&W CM8s.
Get a Marantz 5006 or 6006 to push them and that's a very decent 2 channel audio setup.
You could always do some Def Tech 8040/8060s if you're really concerned about the low end frequencies, but I think they are too muffled and boomy.

Thanks, but I'm limited to bookshelf speakers. Went to a store today and listened to some Paradigm Mini's...sounded good to me, but what do I know? I've been reading the axioms are a good deal.

Those are supposed to be some great bookshelves, and that is a really great price. They were discontinued a couple of years ago, and I'm surprised you can still buy new ones. Too bad they don't have the cherry veneer.
