People bitch about the .380 but it's basically a 9mm short. Has enough pop to do the job, but not much more than that. I bought my wife a Bersa .380. Good gun, all steel construction and fairly accurate for such a short barreled pistol. The 9mm is a good round, I recently picked up a Taurus pt609. The grip is thicker than the Mil pro line but bascially the same gun. Holds 13 +1 also. Dont be afraid of revolvers, but stay away from snubby guns, get a 4" barrel .38 or .357. If you get the .357 you can shoot .38 bullets out of it and help with the felt recoil. Anything Smith and Wesson in a wheel gun will be exceptional, also so is Ruger
