posted in your other thread, but:
In all seriousness, try out the Ruger LCP (which is the same gun others have mentioned [LC9]; instead of 9mm, it is .380 and possibly more manageable for you). I've seen good reviews on it as a very concealable, light weight and reliable gun.
Hickok45 on YouTube has some videos on it:

I personally just purchased a Glock 26 (9 milimeter) or "baby Glock", which is a subcompact. A buddy loves his and I know many others do as well.

People bitch about the .380 but it's basically a 9mm short. Has enough pop to do the job, but not much more than that. I bought my wife a Bersa .380. Good gun, all steel construction and fairly accurate for such a short barreled pistol. The 9mm is a good round, I recently picked up a Taurus pt609. The grip is thicker than the Mil pro line but bascially the same gun. Holds 13 +1 also. Dont be afraid of revolvers, but stay away from snubby guns, get a 4" barrel .38 or .357. If you get the .357 you can shoot .38 bullets out of it and help with the felt recoil. Anything Smith and Wesson in a wheel gun will be exceptional, also so is Ruger

all these posts and everyone is assuming she will be able to pick up an auto pistol and work a slide, clear malfunctions, etc etc??
My vote is for a .38 revolver, preferably a Smith and Wesson or Ruger.

At the risk of derailing this thread.
Are you left or right handed? Should be determined by finding out which is your dominant eye, for best shooting results. Some without much experience prefer revolvers (they seem simpler to people, are reliable, possibly more).
You can get a pocket gun later, don't let whether the experience is pleasant be derailed by shooting a small gun which increases perceived recoil.
A Sig P236, P239 are hard to beat, but if left handed the safety is not "ambi" from factory. I would recommend a 9mm, ammo less expensive (more practice), "+P" is enough except for those who are in the "45acp or nothing" camp. A Springfield XDM is a great gun, great shooting, better than Glock in that it does not rely solely on trigger safety. Those are a few ideas.
Get the LCP, etc after you have practiced and enjoy shooting with a full size gun, IMO.

They are just suggestions, but at the end of the day, she will need to rent different styles of pistols/revolvers to see what fits her the best. I don't think working the slide on a .380 would be all that difficult.

Those full sized autos are harder to rack the slide on. As gmrkr and I said, a wheel gun may be a better choice.

I find a .380 has alot more kick to it.
I recently shot my moms .380 Special revolver, and i damn near fell on my a$$ after. But thats my personal preference.
I would say find out what your friends and family members have, and test fire them for yourself, see what you are comfortable with.

most women need a man to spot them as they shoot. Initially. It comforts females to have their big alphamale boyfriend / husband helping them aim, shoot, and press their jimmies on their backs.

Gmrkr5 you hit the nail on the head. Pull it out point and pull the trigger. You dont have to worry about jams, mags or the safety.

In the video I posted, he locks the slide back aroudn the :40 second mark. that's about all there is to it.
At the ranges (precision firearms) here in BR, I think it is $10 to rent a pistol. do some research then go shoot one and see how you like it.
