Cooking a sirloin steak in the kitchen

How would you go about cooking a sirloin steak on the stove-top or in the oven (and not a microwave)? Last time I cooked a steak, I went with a NY strip and I followed an Alton Brown recipe (30 sec sear on both sides, 2 mins on each side in a 500 deg oven). Turned out great, but set off the smoke detector 3 times. The steaks I have now are less than an inch thick. I'm looking for medium rare, and to hopefully not smoke up the apartment. Any suggestions? Should I just take it to my puny little grill?

An option would be to cut it into strips or pieces, marinate in soy sauce, sake, mirin, garlic and ginger, then stir fry. For me, a sirloin sometimes doesn't make a great steak, but it lends itself nicely to stir frying.

Just light your pit if you don't want to set off the detector.

I've had success with cooking them under the broiler. You'll get browning, but you definitely won't get the nice heavy sear that a grill or cast iron will give you. There's little to no smoke, though, because the liquids that create smoke never hit the heat source. Just make sure you put a cookie sheet or something under the meat to catch the drippings, or you're going to have a mess. Also, you really need to either cook directly on the rack or have a secondary rack to put the meat on. You don't want it just sitting in a pan under the broiler stewing in its own drippings.
It's become my go-to for a quick and easy steak when I don't feel like smoking up the house or firing the grill.

Someone posted this on here a while back. Not endorsing but they swore by it.

Steak in oven
Cook in 275 degree oven for 20 min. And then sear in a cast iron skillet when 1 tbsp of oil starts to shimmer...about 3 min. Per side.
