Country + Punk = Cowpunk

(Maybe that title will satisfy the Anchormen)
Cowpunk was the 1980s descendant of country-rock and precursor of alt.county. New wave crossed with the countryish sensibilities of people like Gram Parsons and Doug Sahm. As the name cowpunk implies it had a harder sound than the country-rock of its predecessors.
The Long Ryders - Looking for Lewis & Clark
Guadalcanal Diary - Watusi Rodeo
The Beat Farmers - Powderfinger
One for the Outdoor Board:
Gun Sale At The Church
Los Lobos - One Time One Night
Jason & The Scorchers - Take Me Home, Country Roads
Two bands featuring Alejandro Escovedo:
Rank and File - Amanda Ruth
True Believers - The Rain Won't Help You (When it's Over)
The Silos - She Lives Up The Street
I consider The Silos the link between Cowpunk and alt.country. If you're a Wilco fan definitely check out their classic 1987 debut album Cuba. The Silos were Uncle Tupelo three years before Uncle Tupelo was Uncle Tupelo.

I was never into Dash. Guess I need to check them out.
Actually, I never really heard much Cowpunk at all at the time. I couldn't afford to buy records, and little of their stuff was played on KLSU (forget the other stations). "Looking For Lewis & Clark" got played on MTV (and was a top 20 hit in England), as were "Watusi Rodeo" and maybe two or three Scorchers tracks. I specifically recall hearing "Lost Weekend" by The Beat Farmers precisely once on KLSU. They were not IDed, and I didn't find out who had done the song for 15+ years, long after Country Dick Montana had died.

The Vulgar Boatmen were an offshoot of The Silos:
The Vulgar Boatmen - "You & Your Sister"
The Vulgar Boatmen - "The Street Where You Live"

Please check out the Pleasure Barons. Dave Alvin, Country DIck Montana and Mojo Nixon formed the first cowpunk supergroup.

One of the most infectious pop songs I've heard (in a good way) and a solid album. Thanks for that one as well. Not in the same class as the Silos' Cuba but still very good driving around pop music for the car.

Does the original thread still exist somewhere?

They played a good friend of mine's wedding reception. Good times.
