From 24/7 Announcement of Smith's commitment:

"Smith said that he never seriously entertained the thought of leaving the state for college, but did hope to allow his process to play out long enough to get the Tigers some exposure on national television at the Army All-American Game - an event that now highlights commitments during the broadcasting as much as the action itself.

"I wanted to do it there, but I got that gut feeling to do it now and get it over with," Smith said. "It wasn’t all about the hype of doing with hats or anything like that."
He just got 1 gold star right there talking about the ridiculous hype at All Star Games...and it would be one thing if those guys at those games even honored their commitments. Probably at least 30% of them put on one hat and end up signing with another school. That guy from California last year committed to 3 different Pac 10 schools in like a week. So much for his All Star Game committal which wasn't his final choice.
