Ive never got a chance to just sit and watch this classic. What is the MTVB's thoughts on it? Does it hold up well against time? Its one of those movies Ive always wanted to see but always forget to rent when I cant find shite at the movie store

I always liked the movie. Plus it was back before Teri Garr was suffereing the effects of MS and the toll that the medications took on her.

The end of the movie is exhibit A for why models can be as cool or cooler than cgi. It also has great characters, script and direction.
On my cable it's usually on some Encory channel every week and doesn't need editing for content, if you can't catch it there for sure watch it at some point.
You'll never see Devil's Tower the same.

The model is in the smithsonian. It's crazy that they made it with parts from train sets. All the antenaae were light posts. They also had ww-2 planes on it, R2D2 and a small town and a US mailbox.
But a really cool model

It's definitely dated, but in an endearing sort of way.
Very well acted and the effects at the time were pretty state of the art stuff. Does it hold up against time? Maybe so. Not as well as Alien does, but still in all a classic. I would have it in my personal collection and be proud.

It's been about 9 years since I watched it, and I loved it then, want to watch it again now.
Agreed. I was at the EMP Museum in Seattle a few weeks ago and was thinking the same thing while going through their collection of sci-fi and horror costumes, models, and props.

The only bad part was the Tillman's Corner mud copy of Devil's Tower he built on the dining room table.
That scene should have had about 75% of it cut.
The big model scenes were shot in one of the big hangers at Brookley Field in Mobile.

I remember seeing it in 99' and being blown away. A few years ago I watched it and it was kind of slow.

Spoilers
Would you leave in the ufo, since he had family.? Or if single?

I only saw bits and pieces (or at least that's how I remembered it) as a kid but years later as an adult I was driving through Montana and Wyoming and saw Devil's Tower and immediately thought - Close Encounters.
So...I guess what I am saying is...it's an iconic movie...I need to go back and watch it too.
