From talking to all of the guys driving big rigs, these Gen 3,4,5, and 6 motors aren't worth a shite. I know of a few that absolutely will not buy a new truck because the motors are garbage and the costs associated with them are astronomical.
I actually worked for LA Machinery for about a month art the end of last year, but never heard of cleaning a DPF

So from what I've read, the ECU measures pressure and temp before in and behind the DPF. Seems to me like you could figure out what the pressure drop across the filter is supposed to be when it's clean and restrict the exhaust just enough between the sensors to tell it what it wants to hear without having to re-program the bastard.

Hammer, you are correct about the new tier motors. The new regs add at least 20% to the base cost since tier 4 emissions hit in 2011. The really shitty part is that that it devalues the equipment the motors are in; we can't sell this shite used overseas because the rest of the world doesn't use it.
Not sure what you did at LA Machinery, obviously, and not all dealers have invested in the DPF cleaners, it's possible that they didn't, or didn't have one at your location. However, there are basically two ways to meet spec: urea or DPF. The DPF systems are definitely designed to be cleaned externally periodically. We have a few of the DPF cleaners, they are expensive, our on-highway truck customers have to clean the filters. I would follow up with someone at Ford and see what they say.
