It seemed pretty clear from TV that what really happened was that the 2nd base ump didn't realize that it was ball 4 and called him out thinking it was a straight steal attempt. When it was made known to him that it was a walk, he fell back on the whole "getting off the bag like taking a lead" BS.
Even the SB pitcher and infield couldn't believe it. They kept waiting around like they thought they'd put him back on base.

Which was still the correct call. If you're off the bag, you're off the bag. Doesn't matter under what circumstances you're tagged out.
