There are no must haves in Austin, as it's a vastly overrated city and a damn crappy food town.

That said, the barbacoa taco's at Maria's Taco Xpress and the Especial De Carne Asada at El Taquito.

Agreed.

But best bbq in and around Austin is not Salt Lick or Lamberts. Go to Louie Muellers in Taylor, Smitty's or Kreuz's in Lockhart, or City Market in Luling.

Good Brunch: Lamberts, Moonshine, Jack Allen's.

Thai: Titaya's

Chinese: Asia Cafe (authentic chinese, not american chinese) or Chen's Noodles (noodle house with home made noodles)

Seafood (Austin is not a coastal city and is limited):m Perla's

Pizza: Home Slice, Salvation (try the white clam)

DONTS: Cajun, Southern/Homestyle, Italian

New American: Barley Swine, Congress, South Congress Cafe, Mulberry

I disagree and I grew up in arguably the two best culinary cities in the South (New Orleans and now I live in Charleston). Austin has some good places. I've enjoyed every place I listed.
