Alright.. OB opinion (based on fact time)...

I have 20K to invest in starting a lawn care company. I am doing it, regardless of those of you who think I shouldn't, or should use that money elsewhere.
So, after all of my research, I am torn between a couple things.
Zero Turn - Exmark LazerZ X-series/ Hustler X-One
Walk Behind - ExMark Turf Tracer/ Hustler Super Trim(Love that name)
I am pretty much set on the Stihl trimmer and edger, and I am definitely going with the baddest arse RedMax blower.
Need your input on the mowers. Some of this money will be used to buy an enclosed trailer, so that has been counted for as a max of $3500 outfitted. So basically I have $14500 to use on my equipment. Input from the OB pros and lawn pros is greatly appreciated.
I am also leaning toward just buying a zero or a walk behind for now. But if I go big, the ZTM will be a 52"-54" and the walk behind 48". Only ZTM and it will be purchased in 48" setup to accommodate yards with single gates.
Any help appreciated... if you recommend something other than these brands, feel free to comment. Thanks guys!

Do you have another source of income?
Will you have someone else doing the work on a daily basis?
Do you have yards lined up now as it is?
I have been looking for an alternate source of income, mostly cash, but struggle with these questions. I make damn good money and have excellent benefits, but need more write-offs and expenses. I am not at liberty to work another 40 to 50 hours a week mowing yards. I would have a crew do this for me. The problem is that the money making module does not allow for a full crew unless you can keep them moving 6 days a week with a shite pile of yards.

I have a full-time job, this will be in addition and I will cut mostly by myself, maybe enlisting my brothers for the grunt work a couple times a week

The issue of an enclosed trailer may limit your ability to hall grass/ mulch etc that people ask for. Ex mark would be the direction I go.

I live in Houston were I see thousands of lawn company's don't think I recall ever seeing an enclosed trailer.
Not to mention the extra weight and less mpg over time

my best friend is in the business and makes really good money. He doesnt have a life during the hot months but gets to hunt pretty much everyday in the winter

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the commercial ZTR mowers. I see plenty of lawn trailers and I can't say I see one brand more than another. The three people I know all use scag.
I agree with what others have said about the enclosed trailer. If I were you, I would get an open one and build a shed at the house to keep it under loaded up and ready to go.

Zero turn. Walk behinds are cheaper but won't cover ground as fast.
I wouldn't spend the money on an enclosed trailer unless you need it for something else. Small flatbeds are cheap.

Exmark or Hustler both good brands. Get the one that gives best service in your area.

He will need a good walk behind for smaller yards those ZTR's will have trouble fitting thru gates much less getting in smaller yards. Also when wet a lighter walk behind wouldn't tear up the yard like a heavy riding mower

One thing I would advise to take into consideration is if you know what kind of areas you will be cutting more of.
Some zero turns are significantly heavier than others and can be a bitch getting them stuck if you are cutting low lying soft areas that get soggy. So you may want to look at the weights of the mowers once you get the list narrowed down.

This is the baddest lawnmower I've ever sat on
Actually now that I look at it, that's not the same one, but you get the idea
JD 72" diesel ZTR. Good lawd that thing is a freakin monster. Cut grass as fast as you can hold on
I spend a buncha time on a scag and I like it

I thought he was getting a walk behind or a riding. 48" riding same size as 48" walk behind.

You are right Nodust I just misread. In that case for the OP I would get a big ZTR and then a couple of 22-24" push mowers. Or that new Torro 30" walk behind
