Absolutely. I have pondered this extensively, and yes, The Band is the answer.

I always thought CCR was kind of underrated as well, but The Band definitely takes the cake.

I have tried to like The Band, I want to like the band but have had a hard time getting into their sound. Instead of just posting they are underrated, can you link some of their better stuff?

I have their greatest hits and do like 3 or 4 songs, but what of their deep tracks are good?

CCR was only around for a year or two weren't they? And many people know more than a couple of their songs. Not underrated.

Do yourself a favor and purchase their first 2 records "Music from Big Pink" and "The Band" and find a copy of "the Last Waltz" on DVD or find the soundtrack. The first 2 records are 2 of the best of all time and the Last Waltz is widely considered the best music documentary of all time (it was directed by Martin Scorsese)

If you like Bob Dylan one of the volumes in his Bootleg Series (Vol. 4) was Dylan live in 1966 with the Band as his backup band. Definitely worth a listen as this was during the period when he had just gone electric.

In my opinion it's Pure Prairie League.

Side note: how the hell hasn't Marshall Tucker Band made it into the rock and roll hall of fame yet?

I believe having a flautist is an instant disqualifier

The Band influenced music in a very subtle way. You can hear the roots of Americana in their songs-kind of ironic since Levon was the only American member, which is also why I don't think they succeed stateside like they did without him.

On a related note, watched "Aint in it for my Health" last week.If you haven't seen it and you're a Levon fan check it out.

Heartwarming/breaking.

Yeah but Robbie Robertson, who was as you point out a Canadian, wrote most of the songs (or atleast took credit for them).

I have seen it. Nite...Dixie Down was good, but I already liked that song. Best parts where when Clapton was on stage. I'd rather watch a Crossroads festival

True about Robbie,I just personally thought Levon's sound was the bridge to the American audience.

Also, love the screen name. There was some show a few years ago with a character by that name,I raffed out roud.

Jethro Tull is pretty underrated IMO too. Must be because of the flute

Hard time coming up with another band so talented in various ways that received so little love outside of critics and other musicians.
