Alleva's method of hiring

It seems to me like Alleva's problem with hiring coaches is that he makes up his mind before he even speaks to the candidate, and the candidate is usually a long shot.
Case 1: Pat Murphy. Alleva shot for the moom and spent the whole time selling LSU to Murphy. Murphy didn't really want the job so he reveres field and the situation was embarrassing.
Case 2: Trent Johnson. Again Alleva picks someone out of nowhere and convinces them to come to LSU. That person had no passion for this state or university. Epic fail.
Case 3: Nikki Caldwell. It worked this time. Alleva is 1 for 3.
My observation is that Alleva should determine if the candidate is coming to LSU with a passion for the job before he decides that candidate is the right person for the job.

I think that Alleva is attempting to go after the best candidate with LA ties that he can. Let's not forget this isn't a big state, so the numbers aren't likely to be large relative to other states.
Pat Murphy was a big name coach. Does that not meet your expectations regardless of the connections? Facilities, program, athletes, cash. That's the sell and if connections exist you leverage that.

All three were good hires when they were made. Plus, Torina has appeared, so far, to be a very good hire.

Now we're dragging someone down for shooting for the moon???
STEP BACK MY BROTHER, CHECK YO-SELF!!!!
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
You're accusing Joe Alleva of trying to sell the best people on LSU?
Say what?
SAY IT'S SO JOE! I'm not sure this guy's got it right. But if it is, keep on truckin, mothef----
JJ, is that you?
Let's put an end to all this "passion for the state" nonsense.
Good coaches coach.
Did Skipe Bertman have a passion for Louisiana. No. He knew baseball. That's what we need from every coach.
Now how about getting Petrino to break down some film for us.

Lots of people were praising him for the Trent Johnson hire. It didnt work out, but it wasnt a gaff at the time by any means.

I don't think it was all that embarrassing...

Out of nowhere? Johnson was one of the most sought after coaches in the NCAA at that time! Not Alleva's fault that it didn't work out.

Um, he did also hire Maineri - does he not get credit for that? That has worked our pretty well, no matter what the uber-negatigers say.
(before you respond without reading...yes, I now know Alleva did not hire Maineri)

So I see it's still never Murphy's fault that he bolted at the last minute around here.

So you think all of these coaching hires came in with the attitude of "Screw it, I'll see what LSU is about but I don't give a crap about the university or state"? All coaches have a passion for winning. If you are going to eliminate potential coaches who don't have an innate love for LSU, then you have very few viable candidates.
