I haven't followed the discussions, but saw the trailer when I mistakenly went into Wrath of the Titans instead of 21 Jump Street.

The fact that I saw nothing of the Lake Men or Smaug must mean that they really are breaking the book into 2 movies. Is this correct? I originally heard they were going to do The Hobbit as one movie and a second movie based on new material. If they're breaking the original book up, what unbelievable douchebags. What, other than money, could possibly be the motive?

Also, I saw that Thorin is a human. Just what the frick is that all about? I remember reading the book as a kid, but I don't remember any mention of Thorin being taller, half-human or anything other than a full-blooded dwarf. Maybe I just don't remember correctly.

The movie split, which is fine, they won't have to cut too much out. But I think you are wrong about Thorin.

I think the 2nd new material movie disappeared.

They are going to add more behind the scenes stuff about the necromancer in Mirkwood mentioned in passing in the book.

Yeah. Thorin looks like a dwarf, a noble dwarf.

Wrong about what - that he's a human in the movie or that he's a full-blooded dwarf in the books?

He looked fully human in the trailer. Maybe it was just because all of the other dwarfs were in heavy makeup and he wasn't. He was sitting, but looked much taller than the others.

He's still a dwarf. Granted, thats not at all how I imagined him from the book. I imagined him to be much older. Just a really tough, weathered looking dwarf. Now he looks like Aragorn.

I hope they don't show Smaug in any trailer.

I am sure as we get closer to the release, they will bust out a trailer which shows the whole movie including Smaug.

I don't disagree, but if they're splitting it, Smaug may not be in it at all. I saw no trace of Lake Town or the thrush or anything from that part of the book. Then again, there was a lot of sharp cutting, and I was already halfway into my daiquiri.

The goal was just to reintroduce you to middle earth not show the whole movie. they did a fantastic job on the trailer IMO. That was just the teaser trailer BTW

I predict they will go through their adventures with the Trolls, Orcs, and Elves and leave it somewhere around them floating toward Lake Town.....

I realize this, but if those things were included, I think I'd have seen some trace of them. The daiquiri comment was a joke. Actually, I saw nothing but what annoyed me most about the book - the songs. I have nothing against them in general, but half the book was taken up by the fricking songs. No lake town. No black arrow. No Hobbits floating downstream in barrels. No typical teaser shots of Smaug's tail or something comparable, something I'd expect from a "teaser."

However, I didn't see any sign of the trolls either, and I think I remember that being before the halfway point in the book, so maybe you're right.

Hobbit Trailer

Right at the 1:59 mark you see them attacking several trolls sitting around a fire.

Nice reflexes. That was about a quarter of a second. Still, the absence of the other elements and really, the fact that there will be two movies, proves to me that art has only a very minor place here. They can hide behind the "Tolkien wanted to publish LOTR as a single volume" argument all they want, but The Hobbit is a single story, not conducive to being broken into more than one movie.

I might have to wait and torrent this one, just on principle. If money is the only reason this is being done (and it clearly is), I'm not contributing.

Na. Go see it on the big screen.

I agree it is a money grab but there will be some interesting stuff with the additional story of the necromancer in mirkwood. Or at least I hope it is interesting.

I wasn't keen on the whole LOTR bridge but I think they decided against that for the most part. I still think there will be a bridge but it won't be a whole film. It will probably end with Gollum being chased by Aragorn and Gandalf only to be captured by the minions of Sauron.

From what I remember, The Hobbit seems less epic than The Ring stories. More similar to The Fellowship where they stay together for the entire journey. Could be wrong though.

Guys, the added stuff creating the need for 2 movies is both stuff they alluded to in The Hobbit, like the Necromancer and stuff, and from the Appendices of the Lord of The Rings.
Which I suggest people read if they are into the trilogy at all.
There are tons of material Tolkien wrote about in the appendices that take place around the time frame of The Hobbit.
Plus I think they are going to do some sort of bridge to LOTR.
