Flashback to BR Rock Bars & Bands
Posted on 4/9/12 at 10:26 am
Posted on 4/9/12 at 10:26 am
I just wanted to get some conversation going about how cool the Rock Bar scene was in BR back in the late 70's/early 80's. There just seemed to be so many good local bands and venues back then.
I'll start be listing Papa Joe's & The Sports Page. Anybody else here remember these places?
Potliquor
Maniaxe
Blue Max
24K
Aura
Greg Wright
Bill Guess
Any of those bands bring back some memories?

Totally my bad there Kafka.......
The Kingfish (not the X Club on Lake Martin Rd) had killer 99 cent shows in this era. I saw some un-real shows there for very cheap: Head East, Eddie Money, The Police, Edgar Winter, Starcastle and more........
I was "Anti Punk" so I did not go see the Sex Pistols........

Treedog, I know me and you shared the same smoke filled rooms growing up. 24K used to crash on my floor at my apartment because they didnt want to drive back to New Orleans that late at night. They would eat up my food and leave money on the way out. I lived behind Bon Marche working at 2010 (Rock era). But back on topic: Some of the Racks had music. Also, There was a club on Airline close to Old Hammond next to the Car Wash but cannot remember the name.

No doubt about it, Belaire '78 Grad here. I am one of the reasons that school is called
"Jellaire" now.........
The Rack adjacent to Papa Joe's had bands then. There was a small club across the street called Bottoms Up Club. Greg Wright was the house band back then. The only club on that part of Airline back then was opened by Floyd Brown????

There were two that I know of, the Rock Club was in the Southdowns parking lot adjacent to the original Uncle Earls late 70's and the other was an after hours dance club on Lake Martin Rd. near Laffy in the late 80's..............
ETA: I spent my share of time at both.........

Cooley's (sp) - Buddy Roy Band
And I used to go see Potliquor every chance I got. I can still do their version of "The Raven" on acoustic guitar.

maybe more Lafayette, dunno... War Babies. Did see them reunited in recent years in BR.
If anyone knows, tell me if I remember right... Jeff Pollard was the lead singer. He later went on to front LeRoux. They opened for Kansas on a tour. Pollard was a devout Christian. He led Kerry Livgren (chief songwriter/lead guitarist) for Kansas to being a heavy duty Christian. Livgren then left the commercial world for a music ministry. Pollard now a church pastor somewhere.

Around the same time as Potliquor. Used to go watch them at the Greek Theater on campus. Courtney Westbrook (Kicks) and Skip Varnado were members at one time, I believe.

Found this on the War Babies referencing a 2010 reunion...
From the Smiley Ander’s column in the Baton Rouge Advocate of September 8, 2010:
If you were into music in Baton Rouge in the ’60s and ’70s, chances are you boogied to The War Babies.
The band has a Live After Five performance Friday, says former drummer (and former Baton Rouge TV weatherperson) Terry Burhans, who’s coming in from California for the gig.
Terry and Ed Lakin put together a history of the band:
Courtney Westbrook, Randy LeRay, Leonard Wyatt and Russ Thibodeaux, of Baton Rouge High, were joined in 1966 by Skippy Varnado and Tim Rockett, of Woodlawn High, to form the original War Babies.
When Russ and Leonard left the band, Terry, a Broadmoor student, joined.
Danny Kertacy got the band gigs at The Speakeasy “and almost every house on Fraternity Row.”
The band bought a 1948 38-seat bus and toured Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Arkansas and Texas.
At the White House Inn they opened for The Lovin’ Spoonful, The Cyrkle, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Eric Burdon and The Animals, and other groups.
Terry says, “Road managers Hunter Barrilleaux and Doug Payne helped to make The War Babies a sought-after act from Bogalusa to Boutte, from Dry Prong to Ville Platte.”
In the late ’60s, Terry was drafted into the Army and replaced by Billy Shumski. Later Henry LoVoy and Terry Blackwell played drums.
In the early ’70s, Randy LeRay retired and was replaced by Jeff Pollard, later lead singer for Louisiana’s LeRoux.
After a national album release tour with Casey Kelly, who left the Greek Fountain to try a solo career, the band split up. But many of its members still make music.
Recently Courtney and Skippy joined Kicks members Bob and Clay Coleman and drummer Keith Simoneaux to form a new version of The War Babies. And on Friday, Terry joins them.

just a heads up, "no pun intended", Greg still plays Tabby's Juke joint everytime he comes back to BR. Now living in Cali. He always hooks up with Eddie Renautta (sp) former drummer for "Cobra" from Plaquemine .....

Used to go see the Circuit Breakers wherever they were playing around BR back in the mid 80's. Last year I ran into Bruce Lamb playing the same stuff at a restaurant in Perkins Row, was fun.
There were some pretty good local bands and better bands visiting. Probably saw A-Train a couple dozen times and Asleep at the Wheel visited frequently. Things sure went south.

ETA: Not sure how I forgot to throw out Dash Rip Rock.
