I don't think they call it "contemporary" metal anymore. I believe it's post metal bands.

and my top three would have to be

ISIS
Pelican
Russian Circles

Honorable mention: Red Sparrows

Ever heard The Sword?

I'm not a big metal guy, but my old boss was and he loved them. I have one of their CD's and have enjoyed it.

Post metal is a genre. I'm guessing by contemporary you mean bands that just came out in the last few years. You're gonna have to be more specific in what you mean by metal. If you're talking about crap like Disturbed or Avenged Sevenfold I'll shoot you a snide insult. If you mean actual talented musicians that play real metal then that's a different story.

I mean current time bands. Not metallica or pantera etc. Bands that have been creating the most recent trends of metal. e.g. As I Lay Dying, August Burns Red, Killswitch Engage, Trivium, The Devil Wears Prada etc.

I listen to the Liquid Metal channel quite a bit on Sirius/XM. I'm not a fan of the metalcore/deathcore stuff. I prefer death metal, grindcore, black metal. Abysmal Dawn, Dying Fetus, Jungle Rot, Vader, stuff like that. I also like the retro thrash such as Municipal Waste and Toxic Holocaust.

Surprised no one has said Amon Amarth. I'm no metal fan, but my metalhead friends love these guys. Guess they've been around awhile, though. But so has Mastodon.

djent stuff is sometimes hard to get into for a non metal lover unless you are a throw back to meshuggah stuff, or if you play guitar.

i know it sounds weird, but protest the hero is an easy gateway into the odd time signatures of djent, then its easy to listen to animals as leaders, then its all in!

these guys on youtube cover all the protest the hero stuff perfectly and made their own djent band. they just produce stuff to throw on youtube. its really good.

as far as the newer metal... i lost mastadon a few albums ago, and their last two albums were great. really out there, proggy and smooth. LINK

lamb of god has ashes of the wake, new american gospel, and sacrament which i would put head to head with any metal bands three record run. great straight ahead metal. LINK

red fang is making awesome metal right now. just been slaughtering it for a few years. LINK

Think he's looking more of the metalcore route. Like chimaira, Acacia strain, evergreen terrace, in this moment, job for a cowboy, suicide silence.

ISIS Pelican

Saw these 2 together at the Spanish moon a few years back. Pelican was great, but ISIS stole the show. Hopefully they eventually get back together.
