The NFL has precedent on NOT suspending players for "bounties"

It seems to be slowly coming out that NFL has dealt w/ bounty problems in the past w/ no player suspensions. In the Saints case, the Saints management denied the bounty program and just kept doing business as normal. THIS WAS THE MAJOR INFRACTION and cause for the MAJORITY of the penalties.
I think it is definitely possible and I would argue probable that the players had no idea that the Saints management had been told to knock off the bounty program. My point being as far as the players knew nothing changed from yr to yr.
Players have NOT been suspended in the past for bounties so I really can't see how they could be suspended now bc they were not the ones told to stop and chose to ignore. There is precedent for NOT suspending players who were just following the lead of their coaches.

I just want them to suspend Shanle for a year. Maybe Vilma.

This would make a lot of Saints fans happy

Shut up realtalk. This is really about player suspensions, so take a ride on my suck stick.

personal conduct policy lets the NFL do whatever they want

I'm sure this will stop the NFL.

precedent obviously doesn't matter
Why should the punishment be logical in this aspect?

The point that many people are missing is just that; the Saints are not really being punished for having a bounty system. The NFL knows it didn't give them an advantage on the field, and they know good and well it is a league wide thing, per former and current players. The NFL knew the Saints had a bounty system going on for the past few years. If it was such an issue, they would have brought the hammer well before now. The punishments are for the fact that the Saints didn't stop, when told to do so more than once, and the fact that they then lied and attempted to cover it up.

Exactly, 100% agree that covering up a minor infraction is much more severe than cheating and should be punished thusly.

That's true.
But we're talking about players here.
I doubt the players are held to the same honesty standards as the coaches.

Coaches covered it up and lied. Not the players.
Coaches should be punished for this not the players.

Two words (two very nasty words) - Roger Goodell

Only thing is that he would have to deal with a pissed off NFLPA.

That's the only chance we have. Goodell does NOT want the Saints to have a good season in 2012 after this. He would purposely tank the defense. We'll see how effective the NFLPA is with this.
The one thing that worries me is players are suing the NFL and the NFLPA has to be sensitive to that. Do they sacrifice the Saints players knowing that Goodell won't go after other players for doing the same thing in the past?
That's how Goodell worked this thing the whole way. Smash the Saints and give everyone else a pass. Owners aren't going to say much, they want the lawsuits to go away and don't want their teams getting the anal probe from Goodell. Coaches aren't going to complain...they don't want what Payton got. Current players aren't going to say much. Most know they are guilty of the same thing or know teammates are guilty.
Goodell has done a good job making an example out of the Saints with almost zero backlash from the League. Let me f*ck the Saints hard and everyone else gets a do-over. Give me trouble over it and you are my next target! That is exactly what that ruthless bastard has done.

I hope that doesn't happen. These guys are union members just like every other player. And if there ever was a time the NFLPA fought for it's members, this is the time.
As the OP said, there is precedent for players not being suspended or fined for participating in a bounty program.
The saints defense is in the exact situation the packers defense was. No players on either team were warned by the NFL. but when u have a nazi like goodell in power, u never know.
