Me and the gf decided to go somewhere random for our summer vacation. We were thinking east coast. Somehow we decided on Charleston. Neither of us know much about it. Figured they have beaches, cool history, and possibly a decent food scene. Anybody been? Have any must do's, see's, or eat's?

I used to live there. I like Hank's Seafood, F.I.G., S.N.O.B., rooftop bar at the Pavillion. You will fine King Street for shopping for the wife. I like the beach at Sullivan's Island and Isle of Palms. Check the concert schedule for The Windjammer. They have good shows and they are on the beach. Cool bars and dining on Shem's Creek in Mt. Pleasant. I like Red's Ice House for hanging out (perfect after checking out the museum at Patriot's Point). The Riverdog's are the minor league baseball team. It is a great stadium and the team is owned by Bill Murray. The games are always fun.

charleston is a legit town.

stay at the king charles inn... you can get it on hotwire for less than 100 i night... its a "best western" but well worth the money... prob the best best western in the country.... i stayed there for a week last summer... parked the car on sunday didnt get back in till Friday...

they have a bar called the Pavilion bar... its legit... prob where you need to spend most of your bar time... it is walking distance from the king charles inn.

the history is great... i was there for work so didnt have much time but its fun to just walk around and look... they have walking tours that you can pay for... prob not a bad way to spend 1/2 a day....

Shopping is where they will get you (by you a mean your GF) they have tons of little shops all up and down King street... she can likely kill two days there...

food is great from what i can tell... stay away from the tourist crap.. i ate bbq about every meal while i was there... b/c we have seafood (better seafood) in LA... Jim and Nicks which is on king street ws great... and well priced... its lik their voodoo... just better. i am sure the lady at the desk can point you to 100 great places there to eat..

the beach is folly beach... and it is about an hour away... longer if trafic sucks... think 12 at rush hour bad... my cousin lives there said it took him 4 hours to get out there once....

at folly beach there are only like 2 decent hotels... the best one is the hold holiday inn... now its called like Tides or something... and from what i hear it sucks.....

are you going to be driving? if so i would spend a few days in charleston... because honestly a week is a while to be there... then i would drive down to hilton head for your beach time.... b/c charleston just isn't that great in that respect...

maybe even drop in savannah on the way back..... it is like charleston just more city like...

if you are willing Savannah to BR can be done in one drive... in fact i drove from charleston to savannah so the GF could look at that that stupid hicks store on the food channel... then back to BR... it was a PITA but when i am ready to be home i go home...

TLDR: charleston is a cool town, food is great if you stay away form the tourist trap places.... might be tough to spend a week there.... break it up into a tour of several places
