A look at the 08 recruiting class, star gazing

In 08 (the class of JJ and Peterson), LSU had the #11 recruiting class in the country.
If you look through the class you see a funny correlation between stars and how good kids end up being. That correlation is... there is no correlation.
Rivals does the whole number thing where a 5* is a 6.1 and everything else is below that to try and give you an idea of how good the kid is beyond just a star rating.
Here's some players from that class:
Patrick Johnson (Peterson) - 5* (i think we all know how badass he turned out.)
Deangelo Benton - 5*, didn't qualify academically, decent WR for Auburn
Ryan Baker - 4* 6.0, solid but didn't set the world on fire
Chris Tolliver - 4* 6.0 - complete bust
Brandon Taylor - 4* 5.9 - one of the top 10 safeties in LSU history
Lavar Edwards - 3* 5.5 - Probably the most over achieving, based on rivals, players. Up there with Mo and Hester
P.J. Lonergan - 3* 5.5 - Another over achiever
Alex Hurst - 3* 5.6 - Seeing a trend yet?
Greg Shaw - 4* 5.8 - Again
Looking back on this class just shines some light on how pathetic national recruiting services really are. It doesn't matter what the rankings are of players, it's about the coaches, and LSU has some damn good coaches. This class coming in fills needs. We don't need to worry about stars or national rankings, we need to worry about supporting these kids now that they where our school colors. I for one look forward to seeing this class grow and make this team even stronger in the future.

yeah we get it
recruit rankings are hit or miss
thanks for the 1,000th thread about this
all of these threads just make it seem like all of you are really insecure about this class, and are trying desperately to prove to yourselves that you are not disappointed
it's ok to admit that you might be a bit disappointed

LE was underrated, but not Mo and Hester underrated.

Huh?
When you look at that list, the only first round draft pick is the lone five star who played for LSU - Patrick Peterson.

I generally love positive outlooks, but study after study has proven that the stars do matter.
This isn't a bad class, but stop exorcising your own disappointment publicly with sunshine pumping non-sense.
Like the season, it was decent by any objective measure. But compared to what could have been, only a fool would described it as anything but a bit of a letdown.
Much of life's happiness/sadness is built upon expectations.

Chris Tolliver - 4* 6.0 - complete bust

hmmmm. let's see, we got LaRon, Roman, Steltz, Reid (yeah, he's on my list right now), and a bunch of dudes I'm probably not old enough to remember. never thought of BT in that light.

Alex Hurst is a great example of how a 3 star can look good until they meet a team of 5 star talent that's coached up with a great game plan. In the BCSNCG, he played like dogshit and everyone blamed him by name for letting untouched sacks occur on Jefferson. Its a case where 3 star gets by 95% of the time, but that 5% is really when it counts more than any other situation.
