Horinoya Recommendations Needed...

Afternoon All,
Going to Horinoya for a Valentine's Day dinner (not going on Feb. 14th, of course)...
It would be nice to choose a bunch of cool stuff that you can't get anywhere else.
Open to pretty much anything except (maybe) the monkfish liver (sorry, Glass, I'm undecided).
Should we go with one of the tasting things and just let 'em feed us? I'm not a Japanese food expert.
I know we'll probably get a plate of the deluxe sashimi, plus 2 orders of the passion roll - I think that's the ballin' one?
They have some kind of fried oysters with a special sauce as well...anything else come to mind?
'Preciate it!

Good selection. Horinoya is the second best sushi restaurant in NOLA, after Shogun. I am not sure exactly what they will have that night, but I would recommend some of the following items if available:
oh-toro (fatty tuna)
shima aji (stripped jack)
hamachi (yellow tail)
uni (sea urchin) - really good with a quail egg on top
Japanese scallop
jumbo clam
Japanese eel
Japanese sweet prawn
I've had all these at Shogun and they've been world class. Get any variation of these and ask the sushi chef for his daily recommendations.

Monkfish liver. Last time I went there I got a dozen raw oysters that came with some kind of Japanese preparation. I thought it was different and pretty incredible tasting.

Horinoya is the best in the city in my opinion. Consider asking the chef to feed you...I hear that's a good choice.

I just wish I knew if this cost like $85...$125...$175...
There's no website for the place.

Here is a link to the menu...

I recommend the following:
Ankimo (steamed monkfish liver)
Hamachi Kama (griled yellowtail neck)
Tarakasuzuke (grilled black cod)
Nuta Ae (seafood salad)

do you ever go into a sushi thread and not mention shogun?

Shogun isn't in the same stratosphere as Horinoya.

i havent been to Horinoya but all i have heard is that the food and service are second to none. its def the next place i want to go next time im in nola.
shogun's food is average imo and the atmosphere isnt my style at all. every time i have gone it seems like a place where first time sushi eaters go. and the screaming children

horinoya >>>> shogun
IMO
I actually prefer Kanno over Shogun, as well
