this... I think the Dandy Don prankster struck. Recruiting is a science, but not an exact science. Arthur Mcduffy

I think this was the beginning of the fall of Max.

the best was a tip he had gotten from someone on a basketball player, a 6' 9" forward named Cli Torris.

I hear people say this all the time on here. When exactly do you think this period of time occurred?

I would say recruiting went big with the growth of the internet. Before we had recruiting sites the only info was the magazines that you could get twice a year. (I believe the name was Deep South Recruiting) They sold one before the season with recruits listed by state and one after signing day to let you know where they went. I had to subscribe to them to get them in Texas. Lemming, Wallcae and Max Emfinger were the only experts that newspapers got quotes from.
The USA Today was the only outlet for national recruiting. If you lived in Texas like I did in the 80's, you had to go buy it the day after signing day to even find out who had signed with LSU for both football and basketball.
Back then the only publication I could get that covered recruiting was the tabloid Tiger Rag. I've got stacks of them on a shelf in a closet.

Guess I can't understand the humor in making fun of an old man trying to report about LSU recruits to most who have no connections in the sporting world.
I guess taking candy from little babies and killing cats is funny to some here too.
I just don't get it.

The old days of the early 80's was tough on us trying to follow recruiting. I remember staying up late (for recruiting updates and on signing day) to listen to WWL and a radio station out of Knoxville. I believe it was 1520. They would both fade in and out. Then we went hightech and could call in to TigerRag and get charged to listen to a list of signees. Saturday Mornings had recruiting shows on FoxSportSW, so we could pick up a little info there. The day after signing day we had to run to the one place that sold the Advocate in Lake Chuck to get the first real lowdown. Shuffle your feet and all of the Advocates were gone by 7:30. Then came Don, Dandy Don that is. Love him or hate him.....he was a godsend for recruiting buffs.

You must have been sheltered.
I have followed recruiting closely since the mid 80s. Talk radio in Baton Rouge covered LSU recruiting very closely. While there is certainly more info out now with the internet, as far as databases, etc., there was no black hole back then. We knew of every commitment the day it happened, within minutes (or possibly hours, depending on the time of day).
Tiger Rag came out weekly with recruiting lists, but the talk radio shows filled the void of the internet with constant recruiting info.
Also, the local newspapers covered it better back then, when they did not have to compete with the internet.
Even on signing day, LSU had a hotline you could call where a REAL PERSON answered the phone and gave you updated signing lists.

I think the fall started when he said
"Emmitt Smith is a lugger, not a runner. He's not fast. He can't get around the corner. When he falls flat on his face, remember where you heard it first."

Terrible analogy! You never take info from unknown sources and report it as fact. I mean really? LSU got a commit from a basketball center from China named Byte Maiwang. We still love ole Dandy though.

Ok? That is my point don't take it so serious and compare it to killing animals.
