Another building an AR-15 thread

So the OB got me wanting to build my own AR. Had a Bushmaster several years ago and sold it. Wanted another one ever since and you guys sold me on building my own. I've got the lower receiver and the parts kit. Going to put that together this week. My question is, going forward, are there some brands that are just head and shoulders better when it comes to the bolt carrier group and barrels? And is it better for the upper receiver and parts to be all the same brand to avoid any headspace problems? Any good info and links would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

I think the allure of owning an AR is that most are pretty interchangeable across brands. I don't know of any problems with different brand upper and lower.
As far as quality of bolt carriers and barrels, I know rock river makes a pretty good upper, and then you have colt. These are still nice uppers without breaking the bank, but I wouldn't say they are head and shoulders better than some of the cheaper ones. I have an essential arms rifle that was built last year, and it has done just fine for what I use it for.

Daniel Defense is probably one of the better manufacturers out right now. For my purposes I'd be fine with a Doublestar, seeing how I'm not going to be using this thing in Afghanistan.

I agree with CS and 4x4. Unless you are going to do some excessive shooting/matches I don't think it's an issue. Palmetto State Armory has mil-spec uppers with bolt carriers already installed for pretty good prices. If you're installing your own bolt carrier group you should always check the headspace anyway (I already asked this question... was hoping not have to buy the headspace gauge :( ). Good luck and post some pics!

This is what I am trying to avoid as well. I want to do it right but am also a novice when it comes to gunsmithing. Confident enough to tackle this project but not enough to try and get crazy with the options. If that makes sense.

I'm pretty sure that if you buy a completed upper with the bolt carrier already installed they check the headspace. But you might want to verify that.
I watched a video where a guy used a spent 9mm shell, a socket (can't remember the size) and a clamp to remove the ejector in order to check headspace. In other words, you don't have to buy all those tools from Brownell's that they use in their videos. just search youtube and you can find some good how-to's that aren't as hard/expensive as you might think.

I understand, its like when I rejetted my carb on my 4wheeler. I was so confident in my abilities that I attempted a clutch kit and wound up cracking the motor case.

CS4...I think you posted my main concerns. Just want everthing to fit and work together properly.
And 4x4...I have the Daniel Defense lower parts kit and can't wait to see how it performs.

I really want one. I'm not opposed to building one but for my first ever AR I'm probably going to buy on already assembled..

I saw those...Ultimate Reloader I believe. Very helpful. Gavin is his name. Put together a great series on his build. I will definately lean on those during the process.

I have been pleased with my M4 upper from Del-Ton. I just built a stripped lower and pinned on a complete upper. Del-ton was pretty cheap only downside was the 4wk wait. It even performed well during simulated automatic fire with my slide fire stock.
