I honestly think we would miss Colston more. We still have Evans and DLP was originally a guard. I also think if we cut Will Smitth and let Porter go we could get Mario or Avril, but not both

I don't think you're necessarily wrong, but Nicks is the best OL in the entire NFL, including OTs, and the 2012 WR FA group is the best I can ever remember.
ETA: I think we will have the choice of keeping Nicks, Colston, or making a splash on defense. Just one of those three.

I'm not saying he will but Payton's starting players are:
Nicks(5th round)
Evans(4th round)
Colston(7th round)
Graham(3rd round)
Bushrod(4th round)
Pierre Thomas(undrafted)
Zach Streif(7th round)
In other words we scout offense really well and can replace them if need be
We can have the best scouting department in the world but you aren't finding a player in the draft to step in next year and be Colston or Nicks. And there's no one currently on the roster to do that either. They understand they have more Payton/Brees years in the rearview mirror than laid out in front of them and I guarantee they know where the Superbowl is next year. They aren't blowing up the offense to sign DE's when they have 30 mil invested in one and the other is a 1st rounder going into his second year.

Can we afford to pay Nicks, Evans type money though? Cuz thats what he would want, I think we could keep Colston and still make a splash on Defense with Avril or Robert Mathis. If we keep Nicks I dont see us making any moves at all, we wont have any money left

I think we would be fine with Tennent or DLP at guard, obviously they aren't Nicks but I think our o-Line is similar to Denver's old O-Line... It was as much about the system as it was the players.

Probably. Again, though, the salary floor is about to jump up significantly, so teams with low payrolls (KC, TB, Jax, etc...) are about to be forced to spend a frickload of money. He'll get offered more than Evans money, and he deserves it.

No way we sign both. Avril 95% likely to be franchised.

And everybody thought we would be fine with Charlie Brown at RT and Kruetz at C. Pretty sure there's a reason two other players have been given a shot at C while Tennant still waits.

Couldnt agree more, Colston is consistent and Nicks while he is awesome and will miss him and worry about the O-line, our line has actually been a strength with guys leaving we had other guys step up.

Because he was a second year player and center is a more cerebral position than most people think.
DLP did well, but he did have 2 years more NFL experience on Tennant. He's bounced around a lot of teams, and has had to learn different system. My guess is that he was mentally more prepared.

Brees threw for 5000 yards in 08 with Moore being his leading WR, with injuries all over the place. Give Brees time and he will find someone to throw to. I will miss Colston but, I promise you, if we sign Brees before the franchise deadline, Nicks gets it over Colston.

As great as Colston is, Nicks is way more important. Give Brees a pocket, he's unstoppable.

Other guys can step up on the O-line. Would you really rather have Lance Moore, Devery Henderson and Meachem as basically our only receivers? Once teams started covering Graham and Sproles on 3rd down, Brees would go to Colston. We need him and can sign him with a higher probability we could land a pass rushing DE

Look the facts are we can maybe franchise Nicks for one more year, but we can't afford Brees, Colston, and give Nicks Jahri Evans type money which is what he will want, we will have to part ways with Nicks eventually

Other guys can "step up", but no one can replace Nicks. Not only would losing him hurt our passing game, but also our screen game (I know you've seen the Dancing Bear demolish people) and the run game. He's suburb at both. Like someone else pointed out, he's THE BEST linemen in the league.

And Graham and Sproles. With our current OL, Brees throws for 35/10 + 4500 yards with that group. We can take a chance on a guy like Steve Smith Eagles (god I love him) or Braylon Edwards, or even Deshaun Jackson, guys that had dissapointing seasons and would love to take a 1 year deal with a guy like Brees. Give Brees time and things will happen.

DLP had an INSANELY good year on the screens. That mother fricker is always hauling arse down field out of nowhere. I know he has two top 4 guards in the [espn]National Football League[/espn], but that cracker is fricking legit.

I say resign our guys and frick this pipe dream of signing a high priced DE when we already have a crap load of money invested at DE. Find some decent priced 3rd down pass rusher(a Turk McBride who actually does something) and stick with that. We were a minute from hosting the NFC championship, no reason to be doing major overhauls.
