"Nick Saban to Atlanta RB: You can’t sign with Alabama until next year"

mod: i know this is on the secrant, but i do not believe many of the MSB posts over there.
the fact the saban says they will find the kid a job reeks of an ncaa violation...correct?
quote:
How did Nick Saban explain it to you? “Coach Saban said he wished he would’ve been able to tell me this in August instead of now. He said the only reason he can’t sign me is because he can’t sign 26 people. They can only sign 25 people. He said he was going to sign me with the next class. But he also said he would sign a piece of paper to show that they are keeping their word – they are going to sign it and they want me to sign it to make sure I know I still have my scholarship.”
quote:
What will do you do this fall? “He said I’m going to stay in Georgia. They are going to find me a job. I’m going to work. I’m going to physical therapy at least seven days per week. I guess I will work, go to physical therapy and get strong … I will come in with the class of 2013. I’ll get there with the early group so I can do winter workouts and spring football

Mark Emmert runs the ncaa. Nick can do what he wants.

There is no way the NCAA can like this signing a piece of paper shite.

Nice of Saban to set up an HR department for recruits

University of Alabama "finding this kid a job" and providing Physcial therapy seems a bit llike improper benefits.
Posted on 1/16/12 at 11:07 am to rocket31
Is the kid also paying for the physical therapy?

Because it makes the rule about singing 25 in a class nearly irrelevant.
You would think kids wouldn't agree to it, but if they start to en masse, it's a problem.

No it doesn't. This kid wont be a member of this signing class.

He, he would just count towards next year's 25.
The 25 person thing is the smallest part of the story

This cuts to the core of the oversigning argument -- they claim to be itnerested in protecting the kids, but it's pretty clear kids WANT to sign with Alabama, and are willing to be "wait listed" to do so. Just like kids are willing to jump through hoops to go to Harvard.
The "get my a job" part is disturbing, but I'm simply not outraged by Alabama trying to win the numbers game, so long as it is within the rules. And I think being able to sign 28 was a GOOD thing. It encouraged teams to give an offer to academic risks. Those kids then fail to qualify, but they have an interested party who puts them in a JUCO and monitors their academic progress and gets them to qualify. Is anyone willing to seriously argue that Nick Fairley's life would be better without JUCO? Having more people interested in someone's academic success isn't exactly a bad thing.

But what was the whole point of the rule in the first place?
I was thinking of it from a hoarding recruits from other schools perspective.

The point was to keep schools from signing more than 25. Greyshirting is still allowed.
As for getting him a job
13.2.3.3 After Completion of Senior Year. An institution may arrange for employment or employ any prospective
student-athlete (regardless of athletics award winner status), provided the employment does not begin
prior to the completion of the prospective student-athlete’s senior year in high school. (See Bylaw 13.12.1.5.1.)

But you still would have to sign them into a 25 person class the next year. And if you didn't, then I'm sure THAT would royally piss the ncaa off.
But again, is it legal to set up a job for this kid and who will be footing the bill for physical therapy?

It would really suck if a school got put on probation in the meantime and the kid wastes a year.

Yea.

it just sounds so unofficial....
What about this piece of paper that you said Saban would sign? “Coach Saban is going to sign his name on a sheet of paper saying that I still have my scholarship. It was just for me. It’s to say they really still want me.”
on a "sheet of paper", wtf.

Obviously, it's not a sheet of looseleaf paper or scrap torn from a notebook. He;s just saying a sheet of paper. If it's an official alabama document, it's still just a sheet of paper.
A kid signing a letter of intent on signing day is still just signing a sheet of paper.

So now we are bashing on saban for POTENTIALLY screwing a kid over NEXT year... MAYBE.
I love being the hated school again. It smells like jealousy.

thanks master of the obvious but one would think that the document would have an official name and that the student in question would know of the documents title.
my point being: it seems pretty clear to me that saban is taking advantage of this kids lack of intelligence; and im sure the "piece of paper" will have stipulations included that the kid and his family will not be able to understand as well.

That's pretty racist.
