The 'Real' Fans

Or the 'better' fans. However it is put I see it on this site all the time. The older of our fanbase seems to have this belief that because the younger group did not sit in the stands in the 90's and that all the younger group knows is success makes them lesser fans. 'Spoiled' is the word that comes up most often, as if it is the fault of the younger generation that LSU is better now than they used to be.
Let's all agree that the Tigers are better now than they used to be. Does that mean that these players are not as dedicated to the program? I mean, they weren't here in the 90's, they weren't watching LSU play in the 90's. Some maybe, but not most/all.
No, it doesn't mean the players are less or more dedicated. Doesn't mean that the students can't appreciate the good times because they haven't experienced the bad times. What is really happening here is the people who did go to school during the worst times in LSU history are jealous of those who are attending now. I know that I wish I could be a student right now.
To the older crowd, enjoy what is happening for LSU. Not because it won't last (which it may not) but simply because it is happening. You are a part of it now as much as the students, maybe you can appreciate it more because you have seen the lows, but just enjoy it while it is here.
To the younger crowd, Enjoy what is happening for LSU. Enjoy it because it is all that you know, enjoy it because even if you didn't see poor football squads, you know that they exist. Enjoy it because we are winning, and there really isn't any other reason that you need.

I'm 33.
I sat in the stands during my junior high years when the team was getting beaten by 50 points against Florida and squeaking by Tulane.
I was a fan no matter what.
However, I have friends that used to make fun of me for rooting for LSU while they were pulling for Florida State or Notre Dame.
Now those same friends are big LSU fans.
They are NOT real fans. I say frick them. As I give a frick OFF to all LSU fans younger than 30 without first being screened.

I'm sure that hurts them real bad. I know I don't know what I'm gonna do with myself since you don't approve of my fanhood. Damn.

I didn't know this was an issue. I was a student during the 80's but don't feel superior to those who suffered through the 90's because I suffered along with them. The only thing I sometimes fault younger fans with, and older ones as well, is their apparent lack of knowledge regarding LSU history.

Tex Tiger, I'm in League City too. South Shore Harbour. Good to have a fellow Tiger nearby (there are quite a few actually).

That's just how bad the nineties were, though. Baseball being as good as it was didn't help either.

You know this program thrives on people who cheer for us when we do well. It doesn't matter if those people stop cheering when we play poorly. Without the bandwagon fans LSU wouldn't sell nearly as much merch without them.
And i'll be sure to take your test before I wear my purple and gold again... :sarcasm:

Then you were around in the mid 90s.
Were you an LSU fan in 98, 99?

I'm 28 and cheered during the pre-Saban years. Have a degree from LSU and can't afford to buy a house or propose to my girlfriend because of all the money I've spent on LSU football since I first ever started getting pay checks. ESPECIALLY this year.
I think I pass.

I watched games in the 1990's. I didn't watch them in the 1890's.
Shoulda seen ole Bert Jones throwin' to ole Andy Hamilton. Wait - that wasn't either of the 90's.
Who played in the 90's that made us so superior as fans?

You've come in here pretty full of piss and vinegar for only having 59 posts.

I apologize for being aggravated that I was ridiculed for my allegiance to the Tigers while the scribes and pharisees of my formative years were rooting for the Florida States of the college football world to only now proclaim huge allegiance to the Tigers.
