I can see how this would seem like a good idea to Hugh. Smith took several days to sign meaning it probably was a cheap 1 year deal he didn't want to take. I'm sure Hugh thought pumping up the crowd for a warm welcome of Smith would help ease the pain of a cheap deal, only he pumped too hard.
