On my way home from hunting today, i decided it's time to get a new rifle. looking to go primative weapon i can use and retire my old cva muzzle loader.
leaning toward the .444. ya'll experts give me some pro's, con's, and opinions.
also, in mississippi you can also use .35 whelen. not sure if you can in louisiana. dont feel like looking it up right now.

Its a wash for whitetails in Mississippi except for ammo availability. .45-70 will be easier to find, and probably cheaper, and with more bullet weights, etc.
I don't know if Hornady is making LeverEvolution in .444, but you might want to look at it for .45-70.

i have been looking at prices of ammo also. places i looked believe it or not, .444 was cheaper.
hornady makes leverevolution in .444. my buddy is big into Hornady ammo. He gave me another line they have but i forgot name of it.

Inside of 200 yards, there is no noticeable difference. Past that, the .444 performs better.
Bullets are easier to find for the .45-70
Both will kick like hell
Both will kill the hell out of deer

Hornady came out with a 45-70 round that is something like a 225 grain bullet apposed to the 325 grain bullet. This should have a little less recoil and add some more distance capability. I haven't seen them in stores this year but should be coming out soon(they are on the Hornady website). The 45-70 will be awesome with less recoil and the smae bolistic capability.

The .444 is one of those calibers that I don't understand where it came from. It seems you could load a .45-70 up or down to equal or surpass anything a .444 would do.
In any event... either one will work fine for what it appears you are going to use it for, and the differences are negligible for that purpose.

thats interesting.
i figure i pay $269 for gun and $149 for nikon scope, i cant go wrong either way.
just wavering back and forth between calibers.

You can load the .45-70 into an absolute monster. That's where the .450 marlin came from. I've always thought of the .444 as a gimmick caliber.

Why are you leaning that way? I am not an expert to be sure, and I've seen guys hunt with both.

just that single shot handi-rifle by H&R. use it instead of muzzle loader. nothing fancy at all. i dont buy expensive guns to hunt with.

I love my 45-70. I don't know much about the .444. U are right u can get a handi-rifle for about 269 and I got a Nikon Prostaff for 99 bucks last Christmas. When I got mine I used it for 2 straight years befor I picked up another rifle.

It's .38 caliber or larger, so yes.
It's an old black powder cartridge. 38 caliber with 55 grains of black powder. Pretty badass deer round from what I hear.
Or you can get a .500 S&W if you don't mind paying for the bullets.

Yes it is. Shop around good before you buy one. I have the handi-rifle and love it. The single shot is very accurate too(zero moving parts). I put 3 shots in a 2 inch group at 100 yards a couple weeks ago. That's not bad for a big round like that.
