I'm ok with oversigning by 1 or 2 players. Maybe 3 at the most. Normally the numbers have a way of working themselves out. Some guys in your recruiting class usually end up not making the grades. Usually some scholarship players transfer as well.If all else fails,a grayshirt can be offered to a kid.

My dad (former player) thinks this oversigning stuff is a joke. They used to have to sign 50 kids a year because only 20 or so would stay the entire 4 years because of grades or just quitting. Of course, Freshman didn't play either.

if you don't work to keep your football scholarship, why should you be entitled to keep it?"

I have never heard of Saban pulling an offer. He claims that he has never had a greyshirt that was not advised of that possibility before signing day.
In fairness I don't know what a coach is supposed to do when he only has a few slots left and is still in the hunt for more athletes than he has scholarships. The kids often string their decisions out until and even beyond signing day.
The whole process does seem to be more than a bit unseemly, especially when it comes to recruits who have made a verbal commitment to a team.
The problem is not being limited to 25 signees it is the methods employed in getting down to the 85 on scholarship. How heavy handed a coach is in this roster management is the real issue. Coaches have great discretion in whether a kid has a soft landing or is kicked to the curb.
